Installed freshly rebuilt quadrajrt on my 455. When cold it will not stay running even at hi idle. There is no butterfly(hasn't been for years and it always ran well) The only way i can keep it running is by pumping the excelerator pump. However it idles fine once the engine warms up! I've excluded a vacuum leak since idle is fine after marm up. What's going on here? thanks for any help you can give .

Your situation sounds pretty normal for a carb with no choke. Maybe the carb was running richer before the rebuild and the problem did not appear until after the rebuild. I would think getting the choke operating properly should solve the problem.
Does your engine have an exhaust crossover in the intake manifold that is working or is it blocked off? This will affect cold engine operation in cooler climates.

Your results sound abnormal, due to carb, or vacuum leak, or idle timing too retarded.
Procedure: 1. verify timing: total Advance is 34 degrees at 2800RPM and higher RPMS. Be sure to leave Vac Advance off..permanently. 2. Close the Primary Butterflys by turning the idle setscrew. 3. Chase both idle bleed screws closed, then open them up 4 to 5 turns. Achieve idle. 4. Successivly close each idle misture screw until stumble-out. Back-off idle screw 1/2turn above stumble zone. 5. Set Idle speed with Primary plate screw. 6. Check Idle Timing advance to be between 12 to 18 Degrees advance. Repeat step 5 & 6 until you get it right.
