I'm looking to run a raIv profile cam with 1.5 and 1.65's at my diposal. I've got a set of 16's, 17's, and 6x8's to choose from..I'd really like to drive this thing daily without having to run $5.00 a gallon Unocal etc... I'm looking to do the top 1/2 of a fresh built (b-4 I bought it) engine. I'm unsure of the bore, but I'm betting its .030 over. I'm thinking of going with the 6x's and cutting them .030-.040 ......any thoughts

Yep, depends on engine size.

The 6X-8 have large valves and nice flowing ports but also big combustion chambers producing dismally low compression on 400 and smaller engines without heavy milling and decking of the block.

The 17s are small valve pressed-stud, would be my last choice.

The 16s could either be big valves with screw-in studs and would be a good choice on a 400, or could be small valves with pressed studs. It all depends on which year they are. Check the studs, if screw-in they will have the large valves and are a great head for a 400 though probably too high for 87 octane, but too much compression for pump gas on larger motors without dished pistons.

the 16's are 68 date coded and are the large valve variety. My concern was the compression would be too high to run "sooper unlead". I'm pulling the heads off this a.m. so I will have some idea of bore/pistons in this thing. I suspect a stock overbore type deal..."mean"
