well trying to get by with an inexpensive9rigth) buildup of a street 400 for my sone's car using some parts I've has for years. Extra 400 crank, 58-62 rods that were heat treated and resized(more later) and old 400 block and some 6X-4 heads.

Got an engine kit from Scott with TRWs and 0.010 bearings as it was a stock crank. First "bad" news last rod journal had to go 0.030 , not too bad but just the start.

Block was good.Decked to zero.Heads magged good and cleaned up good with some mild porting. new ferrera valves and Comp Springs.

Rods- well the small ends were a little too big so we had to order some 0.984 mopar pins, machine rods and pistons. Ok. well then checking big end previous shop that heat treated did't torque them correctly or completely when resized so needed to be redone.

OK short block assembled for me. When I started checking deck saw some weird stuff. # 6 and # 8 were way off. #8 was 0.012 DOWN at the front, and 0.015 UP at the back! Pulled it back down and the rods when machined had the sides cut at a slight angle!
So back with some extra cast rods.

Man with as cheap as new better rods and cranks have gotten it almost pays to buy new! New bolts, magging and resizing old cast rods you have half a set of new forged rods!

Skip, and the new steel rods don't have a zillion cycles on them! I quit using the cast rods some time ago. Another thing not mentioned is weight and dimension. After resizing the cast rods are all over the place for length. Not at lot, but still aggravating when you're trying to deck for zero. The forged rods I've been getting are dead on for weight and center to center length. Saves some money on balancing as well....Cliff

Should have called me! I have piles of stock rods in the shed! As long as you are not thrashing the engine Stock Cast is fine.

Usually I'm found working on my Pontiac. If you want to find me Look for the white picket fence and all the old Pontiacs parked outside. And the half dissembled engine sprawled all over the driveway!

It's getting that way with crankshafts as well.

I recently found out that my old "455" crank cut down to 3-inch journal size is cracked in three or more places, it's junk. Today I can modify another factory crank or buy a new one.

'Damn right it's a street car'

These cast rods have been machined so they should be a "bolt in" after pressing them off the 455 pistons. They were doomed to probably never be used anyway and what I was going to use before I thought I'd finally get those 58-62 forged rods a home. This is going to be a low HP driver motor with either a 204@ 0.050 or 214 @ 0.050 hydraulic cam.
