My guess is the ignoramus tapped threads into the axle flanges so he could run bolts in. I've seen dumber things done to put wheels on a car. Pictures and story coming tomorrow, a '54 Buick with wire wheels that was brought to my shop this year.

Hope springs eternal, but is not the way to bet .
Reaming out for 1/2" studs would have been best - I did that for the Trans Am. |

Many of the aftermarket axle companies offer an option of threaded axles that take studs that thread into the rear of the flange. Looks like the owner skipped the threaded studs and went directly to bolts.
