Default 67 GTO 8 track mounting bracket made my own

I got tired of waiting for an 8 track mounting bracket to come my way so I made one this afternoon. It won't fool too many knowledgeable Pontiac guys but 99 people out of a 100 at a car show won't know its not correct. I started with a 8 track and bracket from a Grand Prix or Bonneville and ended up with a decent looking mount. It fits securely and out of the way. What do you guys think? I have more pics if anybody wants them.

Change the woodgrain to the 67 style and it will look better, rest is fine.

Looks good. I've thought about putting my 8-track into my 66 but it is on my 'to-do' list. It is a very long list.

Thumbs up 8 track install

Looks Great
A lot of us (including me!) don't have a 100 point show car, so an 8 track is a great addition.

Please send em some photos of how it was done and what brackets were used.

Thanks, Ron

Thanks for the compliments. Does anyone know where I can get some woodgrain vinyl to match the GTO. Is somebody reproducing the big car faceplates in something other than the burlwood?

All I did was take my rotorzip and cut the top piece off. I flipped that part over and it fit perfectly as the top chrome piece. The black case must be trimmed about a 1/4 inch starting where it curves up

The cut off piece has to be mounted separately and then the rest of it is mounted tight up against it. I made a bracket out of flat aluminum strap then took some plumbers tape (perforated steel strap) and strapped the 8 track player to the aluminum mounting bracket.

The mounting bracket then bolts up to the top piece that that was cut off and mounted separately using the original 8 track mounting holes. I only had to drill 3 small holes in the bottom of the dash to mount the piece that was cut off.

I haven't put my console in yet but there should be plenty of room.

Here is a few more pics, I'll take some more after I pull the 8 track player back out.

Few more pics, note the revised aluminum bracket, previous one was too wide where it mounted on top of the player and was hitting the black case. Woodgrain for face plate?

I like it. Id really like to have one in my car but the one question is this -

Would you ever use it? The 8 Track tapes are useless because of age. So the whole unit is for looks only. Pretty expensive piece to have just for looks.

My car had one from the factory but the the original one was long gone. I think I only gave a $100 or so for the unit with the original harnesses, I'm just hoping it works. My car has the original AM radio which works but I have seen some FM converters that slide into the 8 track player. I'm going to pick one up as soon as I make sure the player works, that way I'll have some FM tunes. I replaced the original speaker with a nice dual speaker unit. The AM actually sounds pretty good but we only have a few AM stations here and they are Country Western. Original 67 GTO 8 track players come up rarely, I think the last one I saw on Ebay went for $600, too much for my budget.

I remember my mother owning a Gremlin with a non factory 8 track player (from Radio Shack) with an FM converter, then a few years later she had a converter that played cassette tapes. Now what if she had the CD player adapter (looks like a cassette tape) that we use buy that would convert the cassette player to a CD? Now that would have been a sight!!

Anyway, I think the going rate for a restored player that works is up around $800 or more.

Old Blue 66 - that is EXACTLY what I plan to do with the 8 track for my 73 Firebird....once I get it put back together and working (It's in a million pieces in a box at the moment...). I have a new in the box 8-track to cassette converter, and will get a cassette to CD converter (or maybe IPOD)....

A few more pics mounted with new woodgrain on the 8 track player and console. I contacted the guys at R.E.M. who made the woodgrain for my console and asked them to sell me a piece of the matching woodgrain vinyl so I could do the 8 track player face. They were very nice and immediately sent me out a 10X10 piece free of charge, kudos to them.
