Tiac,
The shots above & below are of my Good Friend 63Lemans' car. I am just part of the group that helped him locate/built & continue to have fun with it. We are all in the same club & have many a great time with our cars. Like I said we don't care about a few rough spots, overall it came out great. Far beyond the bucket of bolts & rust it was. But the most important thing is he is now able to enjoy the living h*ell out of it. The picture below is from this past VMP Pontiacs in the Park show. Can't remember the fellows name who owns the 63 with the lettering, he' out of NC (sorry)

Nice 63's and 61.You guys keep it up and I'll find the $ to finish mine someday.I'm looking at a 9" now as parts availibilty.Dana would be a forget it rear but heavy and changing gears would be a pain. Tom Watt told me the Dana uses up more hp than the others. Best 12 bolt,9", Dana int hat order. The guys that ran the SS/AA cuda were trying a 12 bolt to see how quicker they would go.

Isn't the 67-69 Firebird rear real close to the
same width as the stock transaxle drum to drum? I know I asked a question like this in the past but I didn't take the time to look for that old post. Supposedly, a 71-74 Chevy Nova 8.5" 10 bolt is the same width drum to drum as the 1st gen Fire- birds. The 8.5" 10 bolt is easily as tough(or tougher) than a 12-bolt, plus parts are easy to get, and the rear is still in production. Anyways, this will be the rear of choice for my 63 Tempest.

Changing gears is harder with a Dana?
How? Fewer bolts to loosen? How often do you REALLY think you'll be changing gears with a Dana? |

Bump to the top = good info in here -
So which complete kit should I buy for my '63? Alston? Morrison? Other? The Alston kit with the urethane bushed rod ends looks nice since I plan on doing a decent amount of street driving. Are some manufacturer's kits better than others? Better coil overs? Tom S. what brand is your set up? If anyone has more pictures of their set up I'd like to see them. js455ho@cox.net

So far from all of my searching on the internet I've come up with one width measurement from a '57 Pontiac rear.
'57 - Axle flange to axle flange 60.5" I'm purchasing a 2nd gen F-body 9" to possibly stick under my Le Mans. (if it doesn't fit I'll just stick it in my Brothers '72 TA) Here are the measurements. 2nd gen F-Body 9" - Axle flange to axle flange 61" 1st..... Is the width measurement for the '57 Pontiac rear correct? 2nd.... Will the extra .5" make a big difference in how the wheels sit in the wheel wells? 3rd.... Is anyone running a F-Body width rear in their '63 Tempest/Le Mans? James

63 Tempest
James, I use to run a Chrysler 8 3/4 out of a A body (Duster, Swinger). You will need to purchase aftermarkets axles though, they have a 5x4 bolt pattern. I have a 57 Ford 9'' in the garge it measures approx 58'' flange/flange. Just a suggestion! Thanks JIM
