Sending unit
Is there a way to test the fuel sending unit out of the tank?

Yes, using an ohm meter, you can measure the difference in ohms by moving the float arm from full to empty positions. If you can't get a reading the fine wire that is wrapped that board has a break in it, and the sender is junk.
I'm assuming your gas gauge isn't working...Mine is not either. I had the sender out of the tank some time ago, and it functions fine...I'm thinking my gauge may have a problem. It's either that or a wiring problem...somewhere between the tank and gauge, which will be a joy to figure out...

Bought this car two years ago it was never road worthy asthe brakes were toast!! Literally and we’re finally set up in our shop with a lift to start working on it. Guy who had it did something with the gauges we have the tank out, so rather then having to pull it out again after everything is detailed, wondered if we might be able to test it. We know we need the O ring and the mesh bag, but the unit looks good. Where would one get that meter?

Also can you tell me why the unit for an air conditioned car is different from a sending unit for a non air conditioned car? Mine has air, and I cannot seem to find a unit anywhere for an air condition car should we need one if this one we have needs replaced.

Best way to troubleshoot a GM fuel gauge: unhook the wire from the sending unit. At this point, the gauge shoot past full. If you ground out the wire from the sending unit, the gauge should read empty. The sending unit is a 0-90 ohm impedance. At empty, there should be close to 0 ohms resistance as read by an ohmmeter. At full, it should read close to 90 ohms.

That e bay one is definitely the one we need, funny I did search e bay and did not see this. I guess it’s the way you word the search. that one doesn’t say if the O ring is included. Hmmmmmm guess I’ll message the seller Tamraz. If not I know NPD has it for $2.50

Take a new pencil with a soft eraser on it. Gently rub the eraser across the resistor wires. Take a piece of very fine wet/dry sand paper (600-1000 grit), gently rub the contact side of the moveable arm. Should work....

You can take a fuel pump strainer for one of the older cars with an in tank pump, cut one end off and clamp it to the end of the fuel line.

Sooo ordered the sending unit you gave me a link to e bay for from Tamraz. Mike did have an ohms meter and tested my old one which failed miserably as we thought it might. So thanks again 77trash......for your help.

Before you get the tank completely bolted back in car, hook it up to the car out of tank and verify it works. The info Canamman gave about how to test a sending unit is the gospel in testing a sender, need to write it on the wall, Lol.
