Default rear diff question???

Ok I am suppose to know everything about GM diffs...lol. BUT I do not...lol

Here is my weird question:

Why does the Grand prix 1969-1972 have flat dent /crushed axle tubes in the rubber bumper mount area on each side? Is there a reason for this? I thought the first time I saw it that it was crushed from the wrecking yard. Since then I have seen several other GP A-body rears with the same dents in the same area. What is the deal? Is there a purpose for this clearence etc.

Let me know what you Pontiac gurus know. Jim

Question

Perhaps the same tubes were used on a car with leaf springs--and the flat area accomodated the leaf spring perch position??? Just a guess...Ben

I believe this was done to allow a little extra clearance for the lower stance on the GPs.

I don't know why it was done either. But I know 70-72 Monte Carlos have the same "flat top" axle tubes. When I bought my 69 Judge, it had a rear from a GP under it with the flat axle tubes.
