Man I just love the old SD wagons. Something about the sleeper wagon look on the road nowadays that I just want to have.

White Warrior is correct - Jean Williams was at the show along with Scott Tiemann. I remember her name posted on the car's info board. Also - sorry for jumping to conclusions regarding the restoration. I assumed it just came out of the shop since it was so incredibly CLEAN! It really is that awesome. The guy I went to the show with was getting a bit pi$$ed since I was spending so much time around this car!
Since you SD fans are enjoying the pics, I'll post the remaining ones that I took. This is all I have guys! (The disk must be full again. I tried a few times to load pics and kept getting "disk quota" errors. I'll keep trying ... ) Vince

My Dad raced for years at Lake Geneva, WI - starting in '64 when they raced 1/8 mile in the opposite direction as years later. They stopped racing when the track closed circa '77 or '78.
The hours of old video he has shows Mike Garfinkle racing the SD wagon at Lake Geneva, along with many other cool cars like Exodus(Plymouth that later became Spartacus - Al DeSalvo's race car), SuburbanKnight, Mr. Ed, Honey, Violator, Old Gold(Cool Studebaker). Great video to say the least - and that old Pontiac wagon always held its own.

Well, then, the question becomes "How did Mike Garfinkel come to acquire the car three years after it was sent to the scrap yard in 1964?"
It was bought new by Hippo, raced (mostly at Cecil County) by he and Harold for a year, had it's aluminum front end smashed by hitting a deer, had the engine removed right before it was repossessed and then ended up repossessed, front end still smashed and without an engine, in a scrapyard on Passyunk Avenue in South Philly in 1964. Who can explain this three year absence? And who in 1964 would have pulled a worthless car out of a scrapyard/impound lot in South Philly and transport it halfway across the country to Chicago? |

I remember when I bought the wagon I did not receive a title but I was given A Certificate of Origin assigned to Union Park Pontiac. I don't know any more about how it got to Chicago.I tried to attach a picture of it when I owned it but it's file is too large. A picture of the car when Garfinkle owned it is in Pete McCarthy's book

How does one go about getting ahold of Mike Garfinkel? His story may prove interesting. Do you know Mike Garfinkel well enough to ask him, White Warrior?
You may send the picture to me at: blownnitropontiac@yahoo.com |

Or what DIDN'T happen?
Only the guy who ends up buying it, expecting it to be the original Union Park car, that's who. Or somebody, like me, who's finds stories of discovery of rare cars intriguing. In fact, judging by all those HPP stories by Don Keefe about lost and found GM Showcars, I'd wager that others do too. But, I'd go with the first one. |

I know where you are going with this but WHO in 1964 to 1967 would even think about retaging a car? They were not worth anything back then!It was NBD to crash a car back then and have it fixed and drive it again.I bought a 63 Tempest that was rolled(big suprise)and put a new roof on it because it was cheap to do back then.Tom

Who said anything about retagging a car?
But, like that Deep Throat guy said: "follow the money......." |
