Question Firebird lug nut query?

Can you use a different lug nut than the metric one? Not going to use the covers that go over them, just want to mount the 16" wheels to support the car while being restored.
See the firebird picture attached that has the same type of wheel on it.
I really don't want to change out my wheel studs for metric ones.

Question Firebird lug nut query?

If using the black plastic covers that "screw" on to the back of the nuts, it seems you must use the metric nuts?? If just using them in the garage, I guess acorn nuts would work?
What I was wondering was there a SAE stud nut that looks the same??????
