Bad booster ?
I was driving my 68 GTO home from work today and 1st noticed that the idle increased some - it’s cooler .i figured . When I got the house and parked , I could hear a hiss under the dash that I first thought was from the speaker . When I press the pedal , it quits . So I’m guessing booster ? I didn’t even pop the hood yet . I’ve seen booster go bad the other way - vacuum leak when ya press down . Other wise the car stops fine . It’s a new booster ( 1-2 yrs ) from right stuff I believe .

Indeed a leaking booster. If it is that new I would contact the manufacturer. Maybe they will help you out.

Thank you ! I figured it’s leaking out of the back . I might pony up the coin for a restored unit instead of a repop . Does anyone have any insight on a good booster , where to purchase ? I’m assuming that what I have and what is available are Chicom replacements .

thanks Scarebird . I use one of your front disc conversions with the stock drum spinels - uses the rear vette rotors and AWD Astro calipers , it stops great ! I just checked , the booster is leaking in the back by the boot .

Scarebird , what are your thoughts on 11 vs 9” or dual diaphragm ?

If pedal rod into booster does not push perfectly straight it will wear the booster out prematurely , if on angle must be corrected . Most aftermarket booster to firewall brackets are off a few degrees from a GM unit .

Hmm…. How would you check just a slight variation ? Do you shim the bracket with washers ?

I decided to buy a rebuilt/restored GM booster from this place . https://www.brakeboosters.com/ $560 shipped but it’s a GM part and rebuildable in the future . Even if I found a core ( I can’t ) I don’t see how I’d save anything but the time I bought it and sent it in for service .

If you can live without power brakes just go manual.
It really isn’t that bad.

I’ve had manual disc on other cars ,and yeah they are ok . I just really like how this car stops and I don’t want to monkey with it . A manual multi piston set up is sure something I’d like to try . And just an fyi for anyone interested , the Hawk HPS pad are excellent .
