Another tire combo
Been searching old threads till my eyes dried out-
Looking for some experienced opinions. Looking at setting up a set of the 17x9 honeycomb wheels on a 74 Firebird. I had a set of 275/60-15 on centerline wheels but no idea what their backspace was- looked and fit fairly well. Anyone try the year one wheels with a set of 275/50-17s on the back without beating the inner well up or rolling the lip hard? Front was thinking about 255/45 or 255/50-17s . I am sure the 45s fit from reading other threads but anyone try to 255/50s. Thanks as always |

I have Nitto 275/50/17 on my car with the Year One snowflakes, they fit fine with no interference.

Great, thank you for the confirmation. May I ask what you are running on the front?

255/50/17. Can't say if these would fit your car, my front suspension/brakes aren't stock.

Thanks again, I am running GW control arms, semi-coil Overs and wilwood brakes so it’s a gamble for me anyway.. just trying to make an informed bet before buying tires.

I'm running 235/55R17 Yokohamas (26.9" diameter) on the YearOne 17X8 with standard backspacing, which I do think is slightly outboard of the stock rally wheels. The front tires barely contact one bolt head on the wheel well lip under full compression, and there's no clearance problems on the rear.
Next set though I think will be 255/45R17. That should drop the height just enough on the fronts and give me some added traction in the rear. It's too easy to light up the 235s. |

Please share wheel size and backspacing / offset.
On the rear of my 1974 TA, I was trying to fit 275/50-17 and with my rims I was not even close. Torq thrust M 17x9 hit the back wheel well 1.5 inches before the lugnuts engaged. |

Mr Twister- any ideas what backspacing you had in those wheels?

The numbers were stamped in the back and were hard to read. I think they are the 6.77 BS version. I never would have even tried them if I knew they had that much BS to begin with.

On my 73TA, I have 275/50/17 Nitto 555G2 on YO honeycombs on back and 255/50/17 on front.
Rear has stock WS6 leaf springs with the front attachment point raised 3/4” using an old Herb Adams kit. Front has WS6 coils with a coil cut off. Car rides really hard over every bump but rear tires do not rub.

Thanks nas t eh. How do you like the 555G2’s? I love the 555Rs but a bit skeptical the G2s can hook up nearly as well.

I have the 555 g2's currently. In temps above 60 degrees they actually hook up quite well. About as well as the Falken Azenis 615K's I had previous, while being a much more comfortable tire than the Falken. Road temps below about 60 degrees, the grip starts to go away pretty rapidly and below 45 degrees, the traction falls enough that playing around with the car becomes pointless. I wouldn't say that they are unsafe or undriveable below 45 degrees, they just don't offer enough grip for 500+ ft lbs of torque at that point.

I like them but I don’t have anything to compare them to on the car as they are the only tire I’ve had on it since getting it on the road. I really wanted that rear tire size and they are about the only choice, that’s how I ended up with them.

I hear ya- that’s the size I like too but pickings are slim.
