Cool Tom.

It's a good crank that came out of a running engine. I really hate to part with it, but I REALLY pissed off right about now. I have almost two grand in the part....

Hey Greg -

Quick question.

Im running into clearance problems whereas I can't get the stock valve covers on the Ram Air V heads. It looks like the Comp Cams 1.65 roller rockers that I have don't clear. They are red in color.

What did you run in ur V to get the stock valve cover to fit or what did you do so you could use the stock valve covers?

I almost blew a head gasket this evening when I found out. Good thing my neck is still attached.

This engine is killing me at this point....

thanks

mike

not sure what Greg did but all 3 of my now running V motors have 1.65 H&S roller rockers under stock covers with the thick gaskets.I believe they are 3/8 thick and avail from aftermarket pontiac vendors.Tom

Hey Tom -

Thanks for chiming in.

Do you have a contact for the rockers and gaskets? I know this issue can not be fixed with gaskets alone but I only have one set of 3/8's gaskets and cant for the life of me find out who I got them from.

thanks

mike

Well the plot thickens. It looks like the intake valve rocker arms that are close to the valve cover bolt holes are the issue. Even with gasket risers, there is no way to get clearance. I know that the roller rocker arms that I'm using are not super fat like the gold series Comp Cam rockers, but geez... I'm almost tempted to grind the corners off the rockers where they touch the inside of the valve covers. ( see images )

Anyone object to doing that?

I really hate to buy another set of rockers because this project is so blown out of shape at this point, but if it solves it, I will have to grab my ankles. But before I do that, I'm still looking for options guys.

Grinding the corner off an aluminum rocker arm for valve cover clearance isn't at all uncommon.

Removing a little material from the corner won't compromise the strength of the rocker, grind away.

Hey B-man.

Yeah - a little is understandable. My concern is that even if I do grind the corner a bit, the rocker will rub on the valve cover regardless. The other more important issue that I'm afraid of is the roller tip of the rocker not being centered on the valve tip. Is it somewhat OK to have the rocker arm not completely straight or floating on center of the valve tip?

Grind off enough material so that the rocker won't contact the valve cover. Guys running cast aluminum covers have even worse interference problems than you're experiencing, so don't be afraid to remove enough material.

To avoid grinding on anything you might consider selling your aluminum rockers and replacing them with a set of Crower stainess steel rockers. I have a set of these and they're quite a bit slimmer in just about every dimension, especially near the pushrod end where you're having interference issues.

The pushrod guideplates will serve to center the rocker arm over the valve tip well enough, if the roller tip is off center a bit it won't matter.

you do need to grind the corner off the H&S rockers also,NBD.The tip of the rockers do have to be straight on the tip of the valve,if not the roller can wear into the alu.I had a builder once try and use 3/8 pushrods on a set of 980 heads and ruined a set of rockers because they rubed against the head a touch and the offcenter geometry caused the roller to work into the alu.Can post a pic if interested.Tom
