1956 Pontiac water pump kit??
Do they sell such a thing as a water pump rebuild kit for the 317 engine? Or just whole rebuild pumps?

I just did the pump on my 56. I bought one from O'riley Auto parts. Several sources out there, I think mine was around $60.

Tried O'riley's but didn't find anything for a 1956 Pontiac 317.

According to Pontiac Master Parts Catalog dated 1960 and 1966 all Pontiac V8s from 1955 through 1962 (and a few newer ones) used the same water pump, part # 540069. While they don't have it listed for 1956 Pontiacs, RockAuto does have one for '62 Pontiacs here: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...350852&jsn=431
Don't fall into the trap of "reverse rotation" listed on some of these pumps.

What engine do you have? I thought there was only one. Some vendors refer to it as a 316 and some a 317.

Since the 4 bolt pumps are all the same, doesn't matter. But there is only one size 1956 motor...pick whichever size you prefer.

It's a 316.6 cid so call it what you want.

Thanks for the link to the page. Yeah I have seen parts places list the engines as 317 and some as 316. I usually go with 316 myself. John

As a follow up. Can the two short hoses to each side of the water pump be replaced without removing the assembly from the car? Seems like it is a pretty tight fit to get the hoses worked in to place. Where do you guys get the hose from?

It is easiest to remove the elbow from each head if you plan to replace the hoses. A gazillion years ago when I replaced those hoses on my 347 I just took an elbow to FLAPS and found a piece of hose to fit. One hose and a sharp knife produced a hose for each head.

water pump kit
I converted a regular aluminum 11 bolt long pump to an early '69 short pump. I was able to get a really reasonable kit from John the water pump guy. I think he also does fuel pumps. I think he's in Florida.
