paint and lacquer thinner? fine sandpaper?

Yes, drops of thinner, misting, wiping, re spraying...I give the credit to steve Schappaugh, who was able to achieve this effect. But first, I used all my original engine accessories, just cleaned them up. They have the original patina of age. I was hesitant when I first saw it outside of the engine bay, but now that it is placed, it looks right.
I'm going for what I call a restor-vation on my car. Trying to preserve as much as I can, and have one repaint. I've recently come across this group: Vintagecertification.com where you can be judged out of 5 areas of originality. Mine won't qualifiy for the exterior portion, but they have different levels of certification, so that's great you can still be judged. I'm not touching my trunk, underbody and have over 80% original interior. Going to have it done at MCACN.

interesting thread...definitely leave them alone..if possible leave it all alone and just paint the outside...you see when I got my car it had a funky silver repaint that seemed to be everywhere (I can still find traces of it)...I was so annoyed that it was all in my jambs and I most likely would never had thought color change (white instead of blue)...if I HAD IT TO DO all over again could I have gotten the silver overspray off??...I recall lovely Lucerne blue paint when I removed the fenders...but the jambs and doors and hinges were covered...I believe I tried and then (this was 1990) I said...I will just go to the local PONTIAC dealer and order all new parts and not deal with it..actually removed the door skins and had them dunked in PA, REDI-STRIP....anyway I do still have the factory blue everywhere else so save what you can cause its 2015

So what's the technique that won't leave a tape line in the jamb or the fog of overspray in there?

TAPE LINE
mask the heck out of the car...so what if you do have a tape line?...preserve what you can if that's what you want..for me its too late on the front cowl...but not the under body or in the rear wells or the metal package tray...even if you cannot see it, you just know its there...frame offs lose this but that's a different game (kinda like starting from scratch)

It's call burning in the paint edge. Lacquer is easy. B/C is a little more difficult. Lacquer will burn in easy if you put lacquer over lacquer. You have to use blending solvent on B/C. Not easy to do. If you spray B/C over lacquer the jams will never blend out perfectly.

If you're able to do it without tape lines then I'd keep the jambs original. Tape lines kill it for me.

They did a scuff and paint with B/C and left Jambs, trunk, fenders infers.
The end results is straight sheetmetal brings with a new skin...

PAINT EDGE
I get this burning the edge that they are talking about...I would work out the details with my paint person regarding this as what type of paint will be used on your car...since I am old I like what was originally used, lacquer..it can be worked with and is forgiving..again mixing new & old and a tape line is visible...that will explain the original paint next to the new paint
