Default 1972 Firebird subframe colour

An argument on the Swedish Pontiac Forum. How many % gloss was the subframe and control arms painted in 1972? My vote is for 60% gloss black.

Default Depends on product and temp you spray at.

Product variation and Enviro conditions will dictate the outcome of the gloss.
If you add more hardner to a two part epoxy system it will trend to the more glossy side.
Less hardner will be the opposite. Hotter the less gloss, colder more. Single stage products with Solvent seem to produce the best finish that is close to the original but they are not as durable.

Can you really tell the difference between 50 and 60% gloss paint?.

I really doubt anyone can tell the difference between 50 and 60 and depending on amount of hardener, type of products you are using i would be surprised if anyone could actually look at a subframe and say it was 50 or 60 gloss. Just my opinion anyway

So what is the correct term for "Chassis Black"? Is it 60% Gloss?

If I'm not mistaken PPG DP90 epoxy is very close to the correct shade

So what about products in the spray bomb for those smaller projects?

I personally don't know of any....they are all the wrong shade. I have tried many different brands and shades, from satin, to semi-gloss, and many more, to no avail.

DP is not a self-etching primer. To get that factory black look shoot 2 coats unreduced, let dry an hour or 2 then reduce 25-30% and shoot 2 more coats. If you want to experiment with the gloss you can reduce more or less but 25-30% is very close.

DP90LF is a primer sealer. It has excellent adhesion to bare metal, and doesn't need to have an "etch". Etching primers are needed to top coat other paints, but 2 part epoxy bonds excellent with bare steel. 2 coats of DP90 and your good to go, show quality. I have watched cars I have done with this score 100% on non exterior paint) Keep in mind the original had garbage black Alkyd paint when new. Shiny for about 2 months.
Almost anything we do is over restoring these.

Use Eastwood Chassis Black. High solids and no primer needed. Dries quickly and is hard. Honestly, no more than most of these cars get driven I don't see the need to go to extremes on the frame unless you plan to drive it a lot regardless of weather.

I will agree on this, unless I have a bare whole frame hanging off my tractor forks and my gun handy

It tends to have a slightly brighter sheen but calms down after a month.

Eastwood products have always seemed subpar to me. Never been very satisfied with the outcome. JMO

X2 on that Fbruce. DP90 before they removed the lead was the best stuff. Now it is lead free and still performs well but I wonder how long the color will hold out without fading?

Still closest and best.

We do over restore our cars. I have seen to many original untouched cars. They never came off the assembly line looking like today's cars.

Hey guys thanks for the input and comments. I'll spray the DP90 since I want the car well sorted and to reflect correctly. Rough crowd around some of these gatherings This is just a spruce me up thing because a previous owner spray bombed the motor compartment and since I have it all ripped apart...

Great job Brewster.......oh by the way, I LOVE the north woods. Spent many a year in Rhinelander, Sugar Camp, and Eagle River.

I doubt the guy on the production line measured the paint mix in percentage of gloss! Variations due to how thin, how heavy sprayed on, paint mix and batch...endless minor details. I wouldn't go as far as to say one is right, the other wrong!
