Default What to do...what to do..tire/wheel dilemma

My 71 TA is a rally II trim ring car originally.

1. Should I use the NOS trim rings? Have 9 in the GM boxes...
2. Wheels needed restoration, but 2 were original paint nice. 2 on one side and restored ones on other?
3. Love my poly F60-15. What's the best radial option?

Any opinions welcome! If you have a TA with rally II and trim rings please post too!

I like the look of the car with trim rings, but I won't put trim rings on my 71 trans am because they are not on the build sheet. If they were, I would install them. The GM of Canada docs on my car indicate it came with Rally II's (although the original owner said it came with honeycombs), so I plan on running radial t/a's on the honeycomb wheels for around town, but will have a set of rally II's with the repop Goodyears as well.

Here is a picture of a white 72 with t/a radials and trim rings.

Stay focused man .....Your building a nice driver quality restoration as far as I know. The car came with trim rings so why wouldn't you put them back on? Restore two wheels, are you some kind of survivor want to be ? A car that will be driven, without a doubt R245/15 T/A radials are the way to go. JMHO

My white car didn't have mention of them on the build sheet, but they were there when I got it and I will replace them. I think the white cars in particular look good with the t-rings.

I've always liked the look of those cars with trim rings, but that's just my opinion. I've seen where Coker is now producing FR15x60 Firestone Wide Ovals in a radial design. They are probably not correct for a '71 T/A but they would give you that same original bias tire look.

Sorry, BFG rock hard TA's are at the bottom of the barrel here.
Stock size for this car would be about 225-70-15. I ran this size with previous generation General Altimax's on my LeMans - other than looks T/A's are cruise in/car show tire only in comparison. I really wish Firestone would fire up the molds again for their Indy 500 Firehawks...

Scare bird you are way off base. This car came with Goodyear Poly glas F60/15 so as I stated 245/60 15 are the correct size and nobody is going road racing and rwl are required

Please point out in the chart to any reference to a F60/15 because I don't see it

A 245 series tire would be an "L" or "M"

here, try this:

Scare bird are you missing the fact that these cars had 60 series tires on them. 245 is not a series it's the width

Given what I do for a living I have a pretty fair idea how tires are sized.

F60-15 =/= 245's by any measure, max 225. note the previous link

You stated above to use 225/70 15 on these cars and that is completely wrong even using your chart. Why would you put 70 series tires on a 1971 Trans Am when properly sized 60 series are avalible ? 245/60 15 fit and look best

F60-15 is closer to a P235/60R15. 245 60 15 would be a G60-15.

So HFR is saying 235/60 15, Scarbird is saying 225/70 15 and I'm saying 245/60 15. So I'm one size over but still not understanding the 70 series on 71 at all

The 235 60 15 bfg's today are not even close to the same size they where 20 years ago. Today that size is to small. I would go with a 245 60 15 today or the 225 70 15

Just to throw a wrench in the works. I have a Lucerne Blue 72 T/A. I run 235/60/15's on the front, and 245/60/15's on the back. I just like the look this way.......

Are they doing that "modern" math nowadays. Do they not do aspect ratio, section width and all the other calculations?
