Default 74 GTO production sequence number question

My 74 GTO does not have a data plate. I know my car was shipped 30Nov1973. About what time was the car being made? Can a person have a new data plate made? I know the job sequence number for cars being built in 09B 1973, 10A 1973, 12A 1973. Thanks for the help in advance. Steve

The cowl tag would be created near the beginning of the body build, 10 - 14 days before the car was shipped, depending on line speed and assuming no work stoppages due to maintenance breakdowns, material shortages or UAW strikes.

New cowl tags are commercially available and can be made to your specifications. They other trick would be knowing which RPO codes were normally shown on the tag for your particular final assembly location (they didn't all do it the same way).

How do you find out what the RPO's are for a car made in Van Nuys CA. ? Steve

You have to know how your car was equipped, and you would need to see a bunch of tags from other Van Nuys cars to compare which RPOs were noted on the tag.

Typically they are codes relevant to and affecting the body build. Powertrain options, like manual vs automatic trans, might appear because you have to cut a hole in the floor for a shifter. Conversely, an engine option would not appear if it did not alter the body.

The codes themselves (ie, "C60", or "A33", or "G80") remain fairly standard (there is some reassigning and reuse of codes) and are still in use today.

Have owned quite a few '73 & 74 Ventura partscars, two Ventura Sprints, & a '74 GTO. Most were Van Nuys builds. Have parted on many dozens more, & I always look at the cowl tag. A51 is the only RPO notation I can remember running across, on a Van Nuys build '73 or '74 Ventura. If your '74 has factory bucket seats, it should have A51 on the cowl tag. From my exp, '64, 65, 66, 67 Fremont build A-body's often had multiple RPO callouts on their body tags, don't remember seeing such a deal on later Venturas.

The body production number, as well as & the internal plant usage (sequence) number that's on the bottom line of the cowl tag, you will most likely will have to extrapolate from looking at numbers off other VN same body style cowl tags, the closer the VIN built cars, the better. The sequence #'s may be on a copy of the original build sheet. Am looking at a build sheet I pulled out of an VN built 80 T/A that I prev parted, that VN buildsheet has what's noted as a DP SEQ NO, which I believe are the two series of number imprinted on the bottom of the cowl tag.

The closest car info ( 74 Ventura custom coupe GTO) I have was built 12A. It appears my GTO was made 11C or 11D. Does anybody have info close to mine. The other info I have are hatchbacks. Steve

Steve, to extrapolate a reasonably accurate BDY number, you will need to concentrate on the BDY numbers from other '74 Ventura Coupes built out of Van Nuys made as close as possible before and after your '74 Coupe was built. The 17series (Hatchbacks) should have their own series of Body production numbers, that's how it is with earlier A-body's & I can't see Fisher Body combining Body Numbers for two different Body styles.

When I'm on the road later this year, I will jot down the VIN's, build weeks, Body prod numbers, & internal sequence numbers off several '74 Ventura Couoe parts cars that Ive pulled parts from before.
