Default '04 Silverado valve clatter?

Now that it's cold, the 5.3L in my 04 Silverado is clattering to beat the band when I start it in the morning. It continues to clatter until I drive it a mile or two. Oil pressure is good, 5W30 oil, runs fine, 121K miles. I bought it new and it's been maintained. It sounds like valve clatter, and it's LOUD.

Any insight? Thanks!

It's probably piston slap. Lots of history there with the LS truck motors. As long as oil consumption doesn't go up dramatically, get used to it.

A lot of 5.3s do this, not a concern really, my 2000 Tahoe 235,000 miles done it since day one. GM released a statement they would cover the engine for 100k when it first started.

My 99 F-150 (4.6) just started doing this. Oil consumption is about a quart a month. Goes away after a few miles.

Not at all uncommon. I owned one of these new generation engines a 6.0 in my 99' 2500 Silverado, and I think more people HAD this problem than ones that didn't. It is so common that they stickey'ed it on my truck site.

Are you running a "bargain" oil filter? Some filters have check valves to prevent drain back. I run a Mobil 1 on my Dakota and since then I have NO start up noises. It's worth a try. The shops I deliver parts to swear by that Seafoam product also.

Same here, 99 gmc. As the mornings get colder I get in the habit of letting it warm up just a minute, maybe two, and I usually dont hear it.

Update: I changed the oil and the clattering went away completely. I guess she'll let me know when it's time for an oil change....

Now everytime it sits for a few hours, it gives a big puff of blue smoke on startup. It just started doing this after the valveclatter episode. 125K miles on truck. I changed the oil twice recently hoping it was overfilled or bad oil. Is this related to the clattering or just normal wear? Runs fine otherwise but the smoke looks ghetto.

5.3L gas engine. Is this typical? What could I check?

I noticed my SS started to do this in the summer. It goes away by the end of the block. Think I will try the "seafoam" which I have never heard of! So what is this stuff, like a zinc additive. Thanks Dave K.

bad for bearings

The 5.3 in my 99 GMC does the same thing...but it sounds like it's one lifter and not piston slap, and only does it when it is cold outside during cold start ups. It started doing it when my father still owned the truck and it had less than 50K miles on it. It always goes away after 1 minute though, once the oil gets flowing good. It has 158K miles on it now, and started using oil around 125K miles. It goes through 1 to 1.5 quarts of oil every 3K miles. I'm sure it's burning it but I can find no evidence of it on the plugs or out the tailpipe. I'm not worried about it, I'll just keep driving it until it quits.
