Mushrooms. Should I eat these?
Note the black flesh under the skin. That's where I plucked it out of the ground and the outer skin peeled back.
First I thought it was a ball, then I thought some stones were tossed into my yard. These are under an evergreen tree with only dappled Sun. |

On a better side of advice NO I dont know what part of the country your from so i have no idea what type of shroom this is and you said its under a pine,  pine is very acidic so again my advice is NO

Mushrooms under a pine tree are poisonous. If they can survive the acid from a pine tree, they are a very hardy, and some, unhealthy for humans.
King bolete mushrooms are strongly-flavored and grow under pine trees. Pine trees and their fallen needles create an acidic soil environment hostile to many plants and fungi. There are, however, several types of mushrooms that not only tolerate the soil beneath pine trees but thrive in such a location. Mushrooms associated with pine trees include edibles, such as the prized king bolete and matsutake mushrooms, as well as poisonous mushrooms, like the death cap.

Mushrooms are everywhere here as well.
Do a "Google" search for "edible mushrooms". The best mushrooms out here right now are the "hen of the woods". They often grow to over 10 pounds, and are excellent. http://www.google.com/search?q=hen+o...w=1920&bih=917 Next best are the big white ones that pop up in the yard. Make sure they are pink on the underside, some of the black ones are poisonous. Just had a nice batch yesterday, and the hen of the woods are up. I've got an old Oak stump on the hill that has 3-5 big clumps of them on it every year. I'll take some pics and post them, we'll be harvesting them later today......Cliff

Here they are, just popped up yesterday and fully grown by today.
These are "top shelf" for edible mushrooms, I rank them right up there with Morels (sponge mushrooms....Cliff

Many edible mushrooms look very similar to fatally poisionous ones. With the poision ones, you pretty much need a liver transplant within about 12 hours or you die. Fatality rate is about 100%. Only experts and people who know exactly what they are doing shoud eat wild mushrooms. Me, I wouldn't dare.

Those are beauties Cliff...but me, while I have tons of them around my woods, I KNOW that I'm ignorant of what to eat and what not to....so mine come out of a jar.
I used to hunt 'shrooms when I was a teenager (see above) and I always say that until you've hunted for them, you can never imagine how many variations there are out there.

The Hen of the Woods is a very well kept secret, even as common as they are in these parts.
Just about everyone around here hunts sponge mushrooms (Morels) in the Spring, but next to nobody harvests the Hen of the Woods in the Fall. They are equally as good as Morels, and finding one Hen of the Woods is like finding a couple hundred large sponge mushrooms. There really isn't anything else out there that mimics the Hen of the Woods. In almost all cases, these grow at the base of large/old Red Oak trees, especially rotting stumps from previous logging operations. One warning about them, you have to get them when they first come up. If the temps get warm/hot, after 4-5 days or so tiny flies will lay eggs in them, and they will be FULL of nearly microscopic maggots. If you don't check them close, they will be the best dose of Ex Lax that you ever got hold of!!!.....Cliff
