Default NAPA Echlin CS89 Points

Evening everyone, I just bought a new set of Echlin CS89 High Performance points off Ebay earlier for a 1970 Trans Am, and they were described as New Old Stock, which appears to be true by looking at the box. I figured they would be better than the newsest stuff probably. I am just curious to know what the "Red" is on the points that I'm seeing in the pictures below? I see two black pieces in the bag also, which I believe are capsules of some type, but couldn't make out what the Red is. Just so you know, I'm a novice when it comes to points, and that's the reason for my question. I'm hoping they are the correct CS89 Echlin Points. Thank You

It’s just a guard. To keep the contacts from rusting/ corroding.

You just remove it before flight...as they say.

Awesome, Thank You. Does those look like the CS89, or is it tough to tell?

Nappas good points and Accel used to be one and the same. Not sure today. I have not bought a set in 15 years. Can you still get them ?

I've been sourcing out NOS points from Ebay for most distributors we do here. Just type in GM ignition points into the search line and plenty will be available. I use and prefer either the High Grade or Delco Remy.

NAPA still offers some excellent USA made points sets, but they will be 2 to 3 times as much as the NOS points from Ebay........Cliff

I suspect the second capsule has a wick or felt pad in it. I kinda liked the square pads that fit over the rubbing block.

The tube has grease in it for the distributer cam that opens the points.

yes and the other capsule contains cyanide; this is handy when you have to drive back to the napa 5 times to get one good set of points.

I just recently installed a set of Echlin HD points and condenser in an AMC engine for a customer. It used a GM distributor so just like our Pontiacs. Still very nice quality and good spring tension. They were pricey though. Around $30.00 for the points and condenser my cost. I remember when that same pair were around $10.00. Wasn't that long ago.

Anybody know if NAPA still sells the higher ounce rated points? I’ll be needing a set when I get my car on the road in the spring and it’s been 12 years since they’ been changed.

Doesn't accel still make high rev points?
Anyone remember Sorenson HD points, they had a cross cut in 1 of the contacts?

Echlin CS 7860C are their "racing points" That means they have high spring tension and are non-vented. Around $20.00. Seem to be high quality.

Yes they do. They still make 23 ounce, 32 ounce. 23 ounce is the standard rating as they call it.

I still use these today in 4 vehicles here, and have had no issues running the 23 ounce to 7,000 rpm. Good quality well made set of points, that I've run in a couple of the cars for more than 20 years without changing them.

Cool. Thanks. It just seems like a lot of times I take for granted that parts are still available, and when I go to purchase them they are no longer made. I’ve kicked myself a few times for not stocking up on items like this.

The only place around here that actually carries them in stock are a couple of speed shops in Phoenix. So any time I'm down there near Lopers or So Cal I usually grab a set.

Otherwise both Summit and Jegs still sell them if you'd rather mail order.

Glad to see that some folks are still running points distributors as I do in my 65 455 Gto!

The reason I went to a Pertronix is it seemed like every regular set of points I bought outside of Mallory : they wouldn't rev past 4000. It seemed like all brands.

Did you try the high ounce rated points? I’ve had mine over 6000 rpm.

If points won't rev over 4000 rpm then there is a problem somewhere else. Heck, the original OEM points would rev to 6000 ... cause lots of people did it and blew up their engines

Had a set of the 32oz Nappa points for 10 + years. They go well past 6K. I have had my distributor on a sun machine and took it to 8000RPM and never skipped a beat.
My engine never, ever has ignition issues. Points triggered CD ignition is far better than Petronix which can leave you stranded. Not happening with points CD.
