Default Question about valuation

I’m not selling but I am thinking of increasing my insurance on it even though there’s no paint on it yet.
The valuation tool gives a ballpark on value but doesn’t address color combo, original drivetrain, etc.
Is there a guideline for Numbers matching or unopened drivetrain components for insurance purposes?

This is not a real answer because I don't have one....but I cover my cars for what I would take for it if I were selling it or what it would take for me to buy a similar car if I had to replace it.

Makes sense but I don’t even know where I’d find another to compare.
I have an odd combination and drivetrain is born with so probably not many to compare.
I guess it doesn’t really matter just wondering how others come up with their numbers.

I just keep it to 10K intervals with stated values unless there is a bunch of money/work in it that would be hard to replace.
Do not get hung up on unique color combinations or options (unless a RA car) most do not add significant value unless someone is specifically looking for that combination and must have it.

68 GTO (non RA)
Matching number non driving project – 10K
Matching number drivable but project – 20K
Matching number presentable driver – 30K
Matching number nice – older restored driver – 40K

Restored concourse show car – base it on how much you have it and labor because it is rare to ever sell it for what you have in it.

It is not RA, it’s a HO. The motor is matching and has just under 70k and never rebuilt. The 4 spd is matching and hasn’t been opened up and rear end is original.
It’s power drum brakes and power steering. It came black on red with white top and no hideaway headlights but I added them because I like them.
I think around 3100 built with that drivetrain if I recall.

'Matching number presentable driver – 30K'

Sounds like this ^^^ might be a good starting point...more if in pristine condition.

If you use Hagerty they will talk you through the process. Not a plug but they have a lot of experience doing just what you are talking about. I had to get an appraisal. It was way high and the guy doing it had no idea what he was looking at.

Tony, I've seen your car. If it were me, I'd get an agreed value of 30-40k for now, and up it to 50-60k after it's painted. You need to consider replacement cost.....how many survivor black/red HO 4 speed cars are out there for sale? Not many, if any. Insurance for these cars is so cheap that I insure mine to the hilt, just in case. Worth it for piece of mind. As purchased, your car was about a 20-25k car. Since then, with all the repairs and work you've done, it's worth considerably more. And when done, more even still. Good luck.

Two schools of thought:

1) Consider what it would cost you to have an equivalent car you liked as much, etc. Easy to find something that looks equivalent for sale but most of those are lipstick on a pig and once you get it home there is a ton of additional investment needed to make it right. Also consider sales tax you would need to pay on the purchase.

2) They say to only insure for losses you cannot afford. - I generally follow this strategy although piece of mind also has value.

I live in Clovis, California (Central Valley) and around here I have seen exactly one 68 gto. I want to say green and white top. That’s literally the only hardtop I’ve seen in person and I go to lots of shows pre virus.
Even the big shows along the coast and Pleasanton up north. Outside of one member on here’s 69 I’ve seen a couple of Judge tribute 69s.
Now I know can’t be darn near extinct so why so few, and why so few restored? I love 65-67 and see plenty of those around. Is 68 not a popular year?
If you have a 68 ho 4 speed car I’d like to pictures of it. I know I can google images but I’d rather see members cars on here.

While the original drive train is desireable......a rust free, original sheet metal car is more valuable and desirable (to me) For example, I'm selling a 77 TA Y82 ALL original drive train but rusty. It's not selling

No rust or patches on mine. Sold in Madera, Ca in 68 and I bought it in Madera 2 years ago. Widow is still around but she has no pics she’s willing to let go of.

If you're up for a road trip, myself and Greg (Gastiresandoil) are up here in the East Bay a couple hour away. Greg's car has been judged by the GTOAA, silver I believe. I just made mine to my liking so it looks correct to most folks. Never been judged, never will. We don't have HO cars, but in reality, the difference is minimal.

They made a lot of '68s, but they tend to get overlooked because '69 has The Judge and more prevalent Ram Air options, and the styling of '64-'67 tend to be viewed as more "classic". From my experience, '68s tend to more commonly be "drivers". You are right, '68s tend to be less prevalent at shows. There are a couple modified (and rough around the edges) '68s that float around up here and a really, really nice red '68 Ram Air convert. The handful of time I've attended club meet ups, there's usually a few there too but not too many fully restored.

FWIW, I have my car insured for $45k which is a little on the generous side for a standard green automatic car, but I went with an amount that would satisfy me if it were totaled.
