Default '64 Lemans Radiator Replacement

I am rebuilding a '64 lemans; not stock, mild 400, T350. I want to change out the stock radiator. I will be adding after market A/C. My stock radiator is the 15.5" tall with the top hose on the passenger side. I do not have any real interest on changing out the core support unless it is really necessary. My questions are, with a good quality aftermarket aluminum radiator should I try to convert to 17"? And if stock look is not important to me should a worry about the passenger side top hose? I assume that I will need to change the thermostat neck to go to a later year radiator, but is there anything else I should be aware of? Thanks in advance,
Steve
