Default Looking for a 69 Firebird Trunk Lid (Deck Lid) with TA Spoiler cutouts

Looking for a 69 Firebird Trunk Lid (Deck Lid) with TA Spoiler cutouts. These are unique to 69 trunk lids, apparently. I was at the Show N Shine car show in Fullerton on Saturday and took some pics for reference.

This pic shows the entire trunk lid.

This pic is a close up of the factory holes in question. Notice that there are two holes on the far left (in this pic) that are cut out from the internal bracing. This is the kind of trunk lid I'm looking for.

Some aftermarket 67-69 tunk lids show these, but when they open the package they have not been drilled out. Probably Camaro lids with no provision for the Trans Am spoiler.

Here's a pic of the spoiler installed in another PY member's bird.

Let me know what you have available before I start cutting into a new trunk lid, ok?

Thanks in advance!

I can confirm that ALL original 69 Firebird trunk lids are like this that I know of. Hopefully, you can find a used one easily. Made it way easy to put a TA wing on my 69. Be warned tho, if using a reproduction TA wing, there will be some variation in the location of the mounting bolts!

I've checked Tom S Bird, and another one from 69 on Saturday. Apparently AMD 850-3567 is the correct reproduction trunk lid. I did a lot of searching this morning to find pics to confirm that, though!

Most deck/trunk lids do not show the mounting holes underneath with a decent picture, but AMD does.

http://www.autometaldirect.com/amd-d...rd-p-1294.html

In any case, cutting into a brand new one to save $30 seems silly, so I'm going to order the AMD lid from Summit and return the OER 8783521 to Classic Industries.

It sucks to be a nitpicky / perfectionist type of guy sometimes!

Thanks for the heads up on the spoiler, I'll check that fit when I get the new trunk lid. I guess I'd better start measuring for that when I see Tom S and his bird soon.

Most early built 1969 Firebirds did not have the round hole cutouts on the trunk lid that were then used for mounting a 1969 Trans Am spoiler. The early 1969 cars still used 1968 style trunk lids. A buddy's all original carousel red 1969 Firebird has a 1968 style deck lid originally.

Mine is an early 69 for sure. It was delivered to Tate Pontiac in Pomona, Ca in late 1968. After inspecting the existing trunk lid, it either got replaced, damaged or something, but it doesn't have the spoiler mounting holes. It's also got some holes where someone tried to install the Camaro spoiler, you can see the bubbles in the paint from where they "tried" to fix it. Probably rust/cancer/whatever.

But having a 68 trunk lid would make sense for such an early 69 model. Thanks for your post!

Apparently not. That's what I bought from Classic Industries two weeks ago.

But a plug for Summit Racing. They had the right lid in stock, shipping from Nevada, and it is supposed to be here tomorrow by end of day.

You can’t go by what repo part Summit sold you, The GM part is identical on both Firebirds and Camaro’s.

I doubt it. The AMD part shows the four extra holes in the support parts underneath the trunk lid, and the others don't. But I'll know for sure when it gets here this afternoon.

Here's the AMD link to the part.

The other trunk lids don't show those two pairs of spoiler bolt cutouts, only the AMD does.

Not sure how early we'd be talking. My car was built last week of December, 1968 and it has cutout provisions for the TA spoiler.

I believe 1968 Birds ended being built in August 1968....

So 1969 firebirds built in the fall of 1968 would be considered "early" is my guess. I'll have to check the build date on my friend's 'orange' early built bird with a 1968 deck lid.

My 1969 doesn't have those holes. It was shipped to Nelson Pontiac (CA) in 9/30/68.

Ok, my Bird shipped to Tate Pontiac in Pomona, California on October 7th, 1968. PHS docs don't really show when it was built, at least that I can see.

Trunk lid comparisons.

No spoiler mounting holes in the OER.
OER 8783521 from Classic Industries.

Two extra spoiler mounting holes in the AMD on each end of the lid.
AMD 850-3567 from Summit Racing.

AMD (left) vs OER (right) side by side comparison. Packing for the AMD is better than the OER as well.

Summary: If you want an easier Trans Am Spoiler install and don't have an original 69 trunk lid, get the AMD lid. Yes it costs more money ($30) but who wants to break out the hole saw, dremel tool and all that crap for $30? Not me.

I've got 5 trunk lids here from different cars. Two have the extra holes and three do not. The one I believe to be original to my early built 69 does not.

I have a friend with a '69 T/A and remember him telling me about the T/A specific deck lid. I though he mentioned something about special dimpling on the underside for the spoiler.

You're right. The pics I posted at the top show that dimpling around the spoiler holes on the TA deck lid and the other late 69 deck lid.

Correct! The original GM deck lids had the indentations in the inner brace around the spoiler mounting holes as shown way above. This makes the repops easy to pick out.
