Use a bore scope and look inside of it stop the guessing someone near you has to have one you can use. We picked a washer out of a cylinder one time.

About a year ago went to do this and it went most of the way around and STOPPED. Roll it back and did the same (about 270°) . So I've yanked the covers, backed off all the rockers (solid cam) still hits. Pulled the distributor, still hits. I'm at the point that the pan or timing cover needs to come off. Any thoughts on what the hell the problem is?

I had maybe 1000 miles on the engine after going through the rods and mains. I did have 150 shot that I'd use once in a while but it ran great. Thought maybe I should bore scope the cylinders first just in case.

Not to sound like a jerk, but this happened a year ago and your just decided to get on it. Hmmm, That would be alot of sleepless nights for me. Just saying.

Anyhow, I'll Apologize now in case I've offended you.

I would do like everyone has suggested. Remove Distributor, plugs, flexplate, all belts and anything else connected to the engine. You can check the status of the valves. Should all be closed. I guess you could remove the rockers and pull out the pushrods too. Hopefully nothing fell down the intake. Remove the intake also, so you can see down the ports. And last you can pull the oil pan see what is going on.

Anyhow, good luck. Please let us know what you find.

I'll air up the cylinders today to make sure all the valves are actually closed and tomorrow I'll get a new borescope.

No evidence of mice anywhere.

Puzzling for sure, appreciate all the responses. I guess if I find nothing in the holes I'll start tearing down.

With the valve covers off you can remove all the rockers and pushrods. All the valves will then be closed. If one is stuck you will notice it.

Well...mystery solved.

The nut looks to be from the ones I used on the carb. It must have fallen in on removal and over the time of periodically rolling the engine over must have fallen into the hole. Which now explains why one day it just stopped solid.

First time this has ever happened to me! Lol

Great story with a happy ending! We had a nut smaller than that fall of a temperature sensor in the air hat on the dyno at speed. The amount of damage was epic! Cracked cylinder walls, (2), bent valves, all kinds off carnage. Not a Pontiac, but ugly anyway.
