Default Repro 400 hoods

I gather there are three different manufacturers of the repro first gen 400 hoods.

Anyone have any feedback on the quality and fitement etc of the hoods and/or the (non functional) scoops?

Default AMD Hood I purchased was garbage

I had heard that the reproduction hoods for a 400

I bought a hood from AMD and is was not great. Here's a video of my body guy working the hood to get it to fit properly. The biggest problem with most repo hoods are the edges....there are waves in the metal on a lot of them. Mine needed work.

Had to do similar work on my 69 as Birdbrain. Cant remember who made the hood though. Thinking Goodmark...

Are the 69 T/A hoods with the same issues?

Thanks Tom. Did you modify the inserts to fit better, or did you do the hood?

The deal killer issues are the arc of the hood surface (does it follow the arc of the fender tops) and unacceptable variances in the length or width of the hood. These things mean you can't get to an acceptable final installation. Quality issues like waves near edges or so so fit of scoop inserts are fixable, annoying but fixable.

I bought an AMD hood that bolted on just fine. Maybe someone doing a much more discerning restoration could complain about it, but it seems fine to me. If I have a complaint its to mirror Tom that the also repro scoops fit for crap.

Thanks for all the input! Do you think it better to use original scoops on a repro hood or try to get the scoops from the same repro manufacturer as the hood?

Which hood does our sponsor sell? They say it’s the best one.

Two hoods, both Dynacorns. Didn't have issues with the scoops, 1 set were left closed, another set were cut open for ram air setup. Both took a little work but nothing extraordinary.

You noted the arc of the hood relative to the fenders. The first one was okay matching up to a set of NOS fenders, the second one matched up great to a set of repop fenders.

I think the biggest problem with my 400 scoops maybe isn't the hood but the repro open scoops themselves are crap quality. Firebird Central just takes the closed ones and dremels them open haphazardly.

bumping this back up. Its looking like I'll need to replace the original hood on my car. Wondering the same things as the op. Wondering what is the good, the bad and the ugly on the repro hoods. If the op used a repro hood maybe he can provide feedback on which one he used. I plan to use original scoops. This car is just a nice driver as I don't want to do the rotisserie thing again. Thanks

Original hood scoops only fit on original hoods. Repop scoops only fit repop hoods. So if you want to use your original scoops, you need to look for an original hood.

I don’t have access to the hood now (I’m out of town) but I think the one I bought was manufactured by AMT or AMD or something like that?

The good.... the fender Arc was as good as the factory hood against the factory fenders. The shape of the outside surface of the hood, including the scoop area and the ironing board were pretty darn nice. My factory scoops fit perfect on the drivers side and the passenger side was dimensionally good but the lip wasn’t quite deep enough but easily tweaked to get the scoop to now sit beautiful.

The so-so... the underside is decent, typical lack of definition compared to factory but very acceptable for a non point judged car especially with a hood pad installed.

The not so great... the hood is slightly too long front to back, not so much to be a big problem but lots of dolly time. The biggest issue is the sides and the back edge (cowl area). The hood was clearly stamped with a light press and or softer tooling so the edges aren’t crisp enough and sharp enough. Result is the hood is a bit to wide because the edges are “puffy”. Nothing impossible for a skilled metal man but the labor hours cost ends up being multiples of the cost of the hood itself.

So typical repro sheet metal issues but the good news is the arc is good, a bad arc would have meant it was basically scrap metal.

Interesting. What brand? I've looked at and tried many different brands, including Goodmark, AMD, and Dynacorn. Wouldn't fit worth a darn. Fit was perfect with GM hoods.
Of course this was 10-12 years ago. Perhaps they re-tooled?
Are you positive your scoops are originals?
