Default A Little Information

If this is of any use to someone messing with or thinking about messing with a 74 350.

It's been posted that 74 350 blocks were non-chamfered. They are.

It's been posted that 74 350 GTO engines MAY have eyebrows in the pistons. They do not.

Had broken exhaust manifold bolts in the heads, so had to remove them.

Trying to decide a next course of action.

If you wanna keep the 350 shortblock in the car, then rebuild it, if it needs rebuilding.

If it does need rebuilding, but you don't wanna keep it. Find a 481988 block to build. You can go with a stock stroke 400, or one of several stroker assemblies.

Now that I think of it, you can also use the pre-'70 400 blocks, since the '74 X-body has the same front subframe, & uses the same motor mounts as 1st gen Birds.

Just don't get a "557" block.

The XX 481988 blocks are good, but I assume that most only have the holes drilled & tapped for the later model, 3-bolt mounts. A decent shop could drill & tap the holes, but that's just extra expense.

I suppose that what you choose to do will depend on what the 350 shortblock needs, and what kind of power you want for the type of driving you'll be doing.

Lots of options.

Thanks ponyakr,

Three choices, either a slap the heads back on the 97000 mile engine, for now, finish the interim 455, using the 46 heads, or keep fingers crossed, install the 511 and drive gently! Lol. Wasn't quite ready for the engine upgrade!

Was just switching to a 4-speed and fixing a terrible exhaust leak.

The 350 is a good little engine IMO, I swapped in a worn out 67 400, than built a 455 for my 74 GTO. Your money and car, but unless your going to be racing, the 350 does an excellent job of destroying rear tires, just as easily as my 455 did.
