James, the frame paint I am using is paint my son got for me thru his work. It is a satin finish and looks great. I couldn't begin to tell you who makes it or what. All I know is that it is an industrial paint that they use on there heavy equipment that suppose to retard chemicals so I thought I would give it a try and boy I like the results. It my not be correct color for the purist but it did what I wanted. I will paint all the satin pieces with that paint. An use either Rustoleum or plasticoat for the shiny pieces.

Default update Tuesday 2/12/08

Started vacation today and the day started off with a bang...Completed sand blasting and primed the rest of the control arms, springs, and the spindles. Was able to get one of the spindles painted cast gray and that was it as the sky opened up and washed out the rest of the day. Until tomorrow...

Default Update 2/14/08

Completed painting of the following items: All control arms(except for the steel look at the ends), sway bars, all steering items, leaf spring brackets, drive shaft and spindles.
Worked about 8 hours on these projects. Also shot a picture of all the front end steering bushing tie rods ..... and rear bushings.. You don't realize how much money you have in these parts until you put them all together. Scary

pictures, pictures and more pictures........
One of the things I did to the steel parts after I laid down 2 good coats of paint and they dried was sand them down with 600 grit paper. This took away from the uniform look of fresh paint and gave it a more natural steel look. I then shot 2 good heavy coats of clear to bring out the color and man what a difference it made. Look at the picture of the drive shaft and you can see its looks like bare steel..
We all live and learn.

Default Continued....

Also completed painting the coil springs. Since I don't have the luxury of mixing my own paint to get the best colors as possible such as natural steel look, cast iron gray and aluminum colors I tried different brands to get as close as possible without going broke on paint. I finally went with Plastikote cast iron paint and there brand clear and RustOleum for the natural steel colors and there clear. It might not be the best choices but, I find that these brands have held up really well in test I put on them and the colors seem right on. They take about 24 hours to really cure and seem hard when fully dried. One instance the drive shaft slipped out of one of the hangers over night and rolled in the grass after falling about 4 feet. I picked it up and wiped it off and not a scratch on it. Just proves my point on durability.
Just my observation and many might not agree but it what I have available and not wanting to break the bank.
The Pictures may appear to have an bronz tint to the items but, its the camara lighting and flash that give off that look. All of the natural steel items are a gray silver look in person. The drive shaft in the previous pictures shows a good example of the steel look.

Thanks for the compliments Mark. It's been fun putting this thing back in shape. I've had my ups and downs with things not looking right or paint not spraying right. It's just a real time consuming experiance. I have to applaud my wife, she got out here with the grinder and wire wheel and started going to town. She gives me one day a week working on my project and shes done alot for me getting this car preped
Heres to her .
Looks like I should make my goal of completing the front end assembly before I go back to work. It dosen't look like I will get the underbody primed in brown primer and the rear end installed. We'll see...

Thanks , Bub

Default Updated 2/17/08 - Wash Out

It looks like Sunday is going to be a wash out as it has rained all morning. I did have time to put the stripes back on my drive shaft. It looked so good I added it to my dinning room collection.
Also for you guys who are thinking of restoring your favorite ride. Organization is key to a good resto. Thank god for baggies.

Thanks Greg, I try to work on it as much as possible. My wife pretty much lets me do what I need to do as long as I help her when she asks.

I agree that you have to keep things organized. I have bagged and labeled about everything I hope. I have all my 74 stuff boxed and put into one area. My car is going to storage for awhile, while we are remodeling and trying to sell our house. Hopefully I won't lose anything during all the confusion.

Default Update 2/22/08

Installed the upper and lower ball joints, bushings and upper control arm shafts with bushings. Didn't meet my goal of having the front suspension installed. Looks like next Tuesday.

Bub,
Do you still have the original brake master cylinder? If so, was it painted black? And what is the date code? Picture provided, thanks.

Not sure if it is? Looks like the power booster is thou. The numbers on the side are real faint. Your guess is as good as mine. What you think?

Default Update 2/29/08

Still haven't put the front suspension back like I had hoped by now. Waiting on a spring compressor tool from NPD to do the job right. Should be here today Friday.
Added some pictures of the full sub-frame. Also added pictures of the rear leaf spring brackets that I cleaned and painted bare steel color along with the u-bolts and front sway bar brackets. I didn't take before pictures cause I didn't have my camara handy at the time. These pieces were full of rust. I bought a product from HD called rust stop and in 30 minutes they were completely free from of any rust and right down to bare. I was surprised of the outcome as I thought I was going to have to replace them. Also, check out my Yorkie helper in the last frame picture. My little helper bud "Chewey".

Hello Bub,

Looks good! I know what you mean about the helpers. It's good to see such a fine example of Viscious Killer Attack Hound. Mine is a long haired dauchsund named Issac.

I'm actually getting ready to get started on my '72 formula 400 shortly after I have knee surgery. I have had to line up a human helper or two for that job. I'll be doing much the same as you are to your T/A. I have just finished aquiring all the parts.

Regards,

James

Well waited 4 days to get my spring compressor form NPD and when it arrived it was the wrong one. The picture in there catalog is not what I received. According to them it is the same part # 988-1 but, it's not the one pictured. The spiral threaded shaft is shorter. Sending it back and going to plan B. Here's some pictures of the rear spring bolts after cleaning in Rust Stop and another after wire wheeling and shot with clear. The cleaned ones are the upper and lower control arms bolts and shims.

Default Upper and Lower Control Test Fit

Until I decide what I am going to do about what spring compressor to use I did a test fit with the upper / lower control arms and spindle. I also reinstalled the shims just like I took them off. Just like the wizard of oz "Scarerow" saying "If I only had a BRAIN" .... "If I only had a SPRING COMPRESSOR"

Default Next up on the Menu

My next challenge is to clean the gunk, mud and what ever is attached to the steering box and shaft and then paint it the correct color it should be. I need help on what color (cast iron gray correct for the box ?)(bare steel for the shaft?) it should be and also the top of the box. Is it aluminum(sp)? I was thinking on just cleaning the top up a bit and hitting it with some clear if it is? It looks like it will clean up real nice?
Thanks for your help.
