Smile Muncie m20 rebuild questions

Good morning all hope everyone had a great Christmas and new years. I’m rebuilding the Muncie m20 out my gto and have some questions. The transmission was quite in operation and would upshift fine but I could not get it to downshift to second gear all others ok. I have unit apart gears look great except 2nd gear engagement lugs are worn. It needs shift forks sliders and hubs and other normal wear itemsbut I’m not sure how bad the engagement teeth have to be before being totally unusable. Next question is how many have had success with just replacing a single gear and using the original cluster I understand it can cause noise new gear on old gear. Not wanting to spend a fortune on this unit as planning on replacing with a tkx next winter and also have an engine build going on right now as well. Also can anyone recommend a reputable place to buy replacement parts.

It would really help if you posted a picture of the gear showing the engagement lugs.

I have never had an issue with running a new gear or even a replacement used GM gear on an original used cluster gear. In fact, I have used gears from multiple parts transmissions to make 1 transmission with success. If there is any doubt, I would replace your 2nd gear and not look back. I am sure your 2nd gear brass synchronizer is worn, causing the downshift issue. Once that happens, the engagement teeth on the gear get worn. If the engagement teeth on the gear get too rounded, the transmission will hop out of gear when you let off of the gas in that particular gear. A torque lock slider will help some on gears with rounded engagement teeth.

2nd and 3rd take the most abuse. I replaced those gears, syncros and hubs along with the reverse gears and shaft( they were the big problem in mine) at the recommendation of a transmission friend. We did keep the cluster, but all new bearings. He said why would you want to do the work twice, if you leave something in that is worn but not worn out.
Maybe if you are pulling it out in a year for a TKX?
