Default GMC YUKON

I know it’s not a pontiac but.....2001 Yukon. Front drivers wheel bearing was going bad so I replaced it. Simple on off job except when the wheel is up on the lift it doesn’t spin free. It stops spinning as soon as you let it go. Passenger side tire will just spin and spin freely. Driving it doesn’t pull during driving or breaking and you can only hear a crunching sound when you’re at a slow speed. It sound like the rotor hitting the wheel or the bust shield but I see no wear marks.

I thought the bearings were integral to the hub on those and you had to replace the entire hub? Torque spec is 184 ft lbs.

They are. Maybe junk China hub assembly. Better take it back apart & see what’s up.

Pull the wheel and check it over. Make sure the pads and backing plate are in order. First, try to spin the rotor, if its hard to turn, crack the bleeder. If it now turns, the brake hose may be your culprit. If I remember, there is a bracket that holds the hose to the upper A Arm and the bracket will rust inside and choke the hose off. If it stays the same, the caliper may be stuck. But either one would not cause a noise.

Make sure the brake hose didn’t get twisted during repairs.

You have left out some important information. Is this Yukon 4 wheel or all wheel drive? If it is, did you tighten the front axle nut with an impact gun? If the answer is yes, almost certainly the plastic cages used in these hubs have cracked and are now trash. They must be tightened and torqued by hand. Chinese hubs are ruined this way almost 100% of the time. If it's RWD only, remove the caliper and rotor and see how free the bearing turns. If it's tight, it's defective. If it's noisy, it's defective, if it feels gritty or grainy, it's defective. It should turn butter smooth and silent.

The bearing turns freely and everything is perfect UNTIL I bolt the wheel on then all goes to hell. Any ideas?

Seems like the hub offset and/or thickness is not correct. The wheel is pushing the rotor in too far causing the rotor to push against the inside pad? Never seen that before and I worked for a GM dealer.

Was that a cheap hub assy? Was it the correct part for YOUR vehicle?

Take of the passenger side and compare to the drivers maybe.

I did this one before, and made the mistake of installing the dust shield facing the wrong way.

But in that case, it rubbed against the brakes, so I could feel a difference braking (worse), and made a grinding sound. Rather than taking the entire assembly off, I ended up loosening some bolts, cutting a slot in the shield so it could be separated a bit and slid off, and then reinstalled it.

I've replaced both hubs on my 2001 GMC 1500, and they were sealed non-serviceable bearings that bolted on the spindle. I remember mine didn't free spin, and I just assume it was a little bit of caliper drag. 70k+ later, still running fine.

On the ground driving you would never know that anything was wrong. It drives just as good as it ever did and doesn’t pull while braking or anything. The only time you can hear the noise is at VERY slow speed with the windows down and AC and radio off. I am gonna look at the dust shield like was mentioned earlier and I am gonna check for witness marks. If I don’t find anything I will let it self clearance cause it doesn’t feel unsafe
