Quadrajet still in plastic
Can someone help with decoding this Quadrajet? I bought it for $10 about 30 years ago when Hilliard Pontiac here in Bradenton, Florida closed their doors. I can't see the stamping through the plastic wrap and I hope the box numbers will make sense to someone. Also, what do you think it's worth? I don't need it.

Can't identify it by the part number but it appears to have a divorced choke so it would be a 1972 or earlier I believe. Might be interested in it for my 1968 Firebird once you decide on a price.

Correct, 24-6010 also is a service replacement for 7040268.

I make the number on the box as 07046927 which frankly is the rong sequence 07046 says 1976 but 1975 and after should be 17056. I read 927 as a California Chevrolet stick shift That said it does have a Pontiac inlet and choke coil on manifold so I really don't know. Have to wonder if that is the rong box. I bought another Q-jet at the same time with box but not in plastic. That carb is a 07040263, which I believe is a 1970 400 MT carb. Not sure if it also fits the RAIV which is in the car.
I also picked up 2 1970 8-track dealer install packages complete with wiring harnesses for the entire 1970 Pontiac line and the 8-track tape that tells you how to use the 8-track player. I bought those for $5 each and I still have one that is unopened (still has 1970 air in the box). I also got a 1971 cassette player dealer install package but I had to shell out 10 bucks for that baby. I sold that long ago. |

7040263 is a standard 400 MT, RA would get a 7040273 if a Federal car. Many have been restamped over the years.

I will try to see if I can read the carb stamping through the plastic. Maybe it is different from the box number?

Also, what is a "Federal" car?

Back in the day California emissions requirements were stricter than the rest of the country (Federal) and carbs were tuned differently which resulted in a different part number.

Padgett, I think I sold that 1971 cassette package either to you or Chris Casperson 25 years ago. If I recall, it was a merchandise exchange, no cash changed hands.

Hoo boy. There may be a lot of numbers on a box but since the general discovered computers 70, 070, or 170 prefix designates Rochester Carb (or Rochester Carb license made by Carter). The next four indicate the decade, year (application not when made), car line, carb type, and last two the specific application. Not complicated.
Now a box may have a lot of other numbers (10- is an ACDelco number) GRP is just location in manuals). But a 7040273 (1970 QJ Pontiac RA with manual transmission) on the carb will also be on the box. Somewhere. |

7046927 is the SPARE PART-NUMBER found in the Pontiac MPC for the 1970 Bonneville 455 H.T.-4 BC exc. E.E.S. or H.P. Rochester Quadrajet stamped 7040262.
Also as found in the Delco/Rochester Manual #9 24-6010 as a Service Replacement for 1970 400/455 non-California All Transmissions. There is NOTHING Chevy about this unit. Also, a 7040273 would have 7036914 and 24-672 stamped on the Delco box, NOT 7040273. The actual application number was never stamped on the box. Last edited by Kenth; 10-25-2021 at 02:45 PM. |

OK, thanks to all for the replies. The "not in plastic" 7040263 NOS carb that has sat on a shelf since 1970. Should I rebuild it purely due to age, or try it on the car first?

I´ll have to correct myself, 7040268 should read 7040262.
And the Service Replacement for 7040268 is the Delco #24-6012, Pontiac part-#7047056. |
