Default #1112072 distributor - Unitized?

Need some info about the 1112072 distributor.

Part number is listed has all 455 except HO, Unitized being 1112073. But the High Performance Pontiac article about the Unitized dist mention the 1112072 has being one...

Whats the deal here? Does that mean the point-style #1112072 was replaced by the Unitized, kept the same part number, but there is no mention of it anywhere? That is highly improbable.. What if your ordered #1112072 (new Unitized) for a point-style car? Bummer...

"The new distributor, which carried PN 1112072, had an advance curve identical to the points-type it replaced when optioned. The new distributor received a specific engine code and YA replaced YC (points) anytime Unitized was optioned for the remainder of the '71 model year. Being a late-year addition, no sales information or any other service information than the said bulletin was printed for 1971."

1112072 2.361 All 455-4 B.C. exc. H.O DISTRIBUTOR (w/YC, WJ eng.) 1971

1112073 2.361 All 455 H.O DISTRIBUTOR (w/WC, WL, YE eng.) 1971

No unitized distributors were factory installed on 1971 models.

1112072 is for all 1971 455's, except HO.
1112073 is for all 1971 455HO engines.

Both are breaker point distributors.

EDIT

After referring to Rocky's HPP article, obviously I'm mistaken about no unitized distributors being installed in 1971 Pontiacs.
Interesting that Pontiac changed the engine stamp code from "YC" to "YA", yet the distributor stamp # remained 1112072!

The unitized ignition distributor (RPO K65) was released in April of 1971 for the Grand Ville, Grand Safari, and Grand Prix only. At that time the engine code of YA was released and included the new unitized distributor #1112035. As Lloyd says, distributor #s 1112072 and 1112073 (455 HO only) are points type.

The info quoted in post #1 above is wrong. The new distributor did not carry PN 1112072, as that PN was retained as a points type ignition-equipped distributor. The new uni-distributor was released for the newly coded YA engine only. YC was not replaced, however, it was released to the B and G-body lines at that time.

Ah-hah, I found a reference to the 1971 455 4V unitized distributor in my MPC charts.

As Ric said, 1112035 is indeed the correct stamp # for a 1971 unitized distributor.

I also checked my 1971 and 1972 PMD option reports, and NONE of the "K65" option were installed during the 1971 MY, according to those reports. Perhaps a "stillborn" option for 1971?

EDIT Would be VERY interesting if anyone has seen a 1971 "YA" stamped 455 block, or an 1112035 distributor.

You guys are telling me that Rocky, who is quite an expert in that field, and HPP made an obvious mistake in their article? And nobody ever noticed?

"The new distributor, which carried PN 1112072, had an advance curve identical to the points-type it replaced when optioned."

I mean, they wrote it...

There is no mention of 1112035 in the parts catalog..

Rocky submitted the article and is responsible for it's content. First time I've known of Rocky making such an error, though.

Perhaps the Pntiac TSB which Rocky refers to contained the error?

Here are two references to the 1112035 1971 unitized distributor from my August, 1974 dated MPC. Note that the application catalog indicates this was for the 276 (Grand Prix body style) only.

Here's the quote from the Dealer Service Information Bulletin #71-1-39, dated 4/21/71:

"Attention: Service Manager

Subject: UNIT DISTRIBUTOR -- SERVICE PROCEDURES

The unit ignition system is now available for use on the L-75 engine as an option on the Grand Ville, Grand Prix and Grand Safari. A new engine code of YA will be used with this new distributor.

All specifications and engine service procedures will be the same as the YC engine. This unit distributor has the same spark curve as the 1112072 distributor. Attached are the diagnosis and service procedures which differ from the standard distributor."

A revised engine application chart issued with DSIB # 71-1-58 clearly lists the new YA-code engine with the 1112035-code distributor. Rocky just misinterpreted the information issued in DSIB 71-1-39.
