Default My Turbo Headers

These are for my '78 TA. They're not finished, still have to cut the collectors right, add the v-band flanges, sand them down, and have'em ceramic coated. They have 2" tubes, short 3.5" collectors tapering to 3", and will run through a 3" crossover to my TV8511 88mm Garret that will be located in front of the waterpump. The downpipe will be 5" back to the firewall, then split to two 3.5" pipes that connect back to my exhaust. My goal is to run 8-12lbs of boost for 800hp at the wheels. What do you guys think so far?

Thanks. Probably about 30 hours so far. There's alot of figuring on how to get around everyting, still get to my bolts, keep the tubes off of my plug wires, and keep the bends nice. When I finish the crossover pipe, I'm gonna clean'em all up and send them to the coaters.

Yea, routing is the headache

look neat.

How are you going to deal with the upper radiator hose?
Looks like it's going to be higher than the radiator, which could be an issue?
Or, get burnt by the headers?

TV8511? What's the aspect ratio on that sucker? 1.39? on what motor? Could be awful slow to spool on a 400
I'm not far from you at all with another turbo pontiac
I'm in Cincinnati half the time (not with the car)

Thanks Baron. I'm gonna move the radiator forward about 6-8 inches, and reroute the rad. hoses in hard line. The radiator is in the stock location now. Never runs over 160 deg. I'm just gonna move it to the other side of the core support. I'm gonna try to leave room for an eventual intercooler if I don't like the water methanol injection.
The engine is a 469". My TV8511 came with a 1.39 a/r housing, but I have an 1.08 and an 1.23 a/r housing for it. I also have a TV7512 Garret that has a small exhaust wheel and housing that I could put my 88mm compressor on. I'm thinking that I would rather keep the big wheel and tighten the a/r on the housing as needed if it doesn't spool fast enough, but I don't want it to spool till about 3,500-3,800rpm anyway. The turbo is at the shop right now so I have about a week to decide.

Thanks Bankbook. I really like your car. Yeah, the pipes are a pain. Watched the video of your car running a couple times when times got rough, Lol! Have you chassis dyno'd it yet? What are using for a wastegate and a bov? I was thinking a 60mm JGS w/g and the Procharger race valve for mine.

good deal

Yea, I was thinking that detroit diesel turbo had a 1.39 AR.
I almost used a TV7512 for a while. I thought that .96 would work reasonably well

Have a tentative chassis dyno date in the end of March, when the snow is gone.

I think the 60 will work fine for you. I am running a Tial Q60 and 50mm. They told me it would be fine, so far so good.

I would start with the 1.08 hot side and then work my way up if needed. To big= slow spool.

Pic a cam yet? What are you using for a carb?

Take and post alot of pics.

Glad to see someone else doing a turbo TA.

Doc.

Looks good! A large exhaust housing might be a good thing for traction.

I'm going to use a solid flat tappet again 'cause a roller is not in the budget. Cammotion spec'd me a cam with 258*-252* at .050, 569" lift, and a 114* lsa with 4* advance ground in. Sent Travis Quillen an e-mail asking for a cam rec., but he hasn't gotten back with me yet. I also talked with Kevin at CSU through an e-mail about my carb and he said to use my Dominator. My idea was to put skirted boosters in it like the 750 Dom's, only up the flow to 850, but he said that the skirted boosters were not needed and to keep it like it is. Mind sharing your cam specs, and what size turbine wheel and a/r that you have?

Thanks 70 Bird. That's what I was kinda thinking, too. The cam , so far, is spec'd for an operating range of about 4,000-6,200 rpm. So I don't really need anything under about 3,800rpm anyway 'cause that's where my converter is gonna be at anyway.

Thanks Ralph. I bought a weld up header kit for sbc's from Jegs pn# 555-31884, four metal fabbing doughnuts from Pro-Werks # c76-564, four Dynamax u bends, and a pair of Hedman Hustler header flanges. I built'em and took them to a local welding shop to get'em tigged up. I've got my merge pipe built, gonna try to get the rest of the crossover pipe in the next day or two.

Thanks Siege. I really wanted headers. I haven't gotten my turbo back yet, and the headers are back at the welder's to get some more work done so I don't have any more work finished. It feels like it's been forever since I got started. Meanwhile, I put a small shot of nitrous on there, a 150hp shot, to play with until I get the turbo on. I have some chassis work to do! On the motor yesterday it went 10.99 @ 123.99mph with a 1.71 60ft. Spinning bad! The best time with the spray was 10.40 @ 133.37mph. That was with a 1.68 60 ft, spraying from 100 ft out and off the button twice. Also, probably pulled too much timing and didn't have enough bottle pressure as it was 800 lbs. That was my first time ever using nitrous. I cannot wait to get the turbo on there!
