Appreciate the kind words of encouragement, I am hoping the "scary" part is over, we cut the old sheet metal off one night and walked in the next day and said, I hope we didn't screw up, lol Pic, |

Well last night I worked on the front end, mocked it up about three times till I got what I wanted. I tried rear steer/front shackle, axle over springs, front steer/front shackle, axle over springs, as in this pic, and then I settled on front steer/rear shackle, axle under springs.
I know everyone that has ever installed a straight axle seems to have an opinion on what is "right" but this will work best for this app. When the motor/trans and all of the weight is in this car the ground to the bottom of the front rocker should be right at 11" off the ground and the front tire should be just about an inch shy of the top of the wheelhouse lip. The rear will come out to about 13" ground to rocker, front tires are 27" tall and the rears are 29" so even thou I want the straight axle and "gasser" look, I didn't want it front, nose bleed high. Should have a nice 2" rake front to back, and the components that I chose for the front, axle width, spindles, brakes and wheels will put the wheels/tires at a nice full stance just inside the front fender lips. Front axle outer wheel lip to outer wheel lip is 65" the rear comes out to 67" so the front wheels are just 1" more tucked in than the rears. Last edited by Transporter; 03-20-2013 at 06:30 PM. |

Stan,
Car looks good! I am going to a salvage yard tomorrow to cut patch panels off a 62 4 door before it gets crushed. Hope to save whatever is left on the car while I am there. After looking at yours and seeing what I have to do, a new rear clip makes the most sense. Your old trunk pan is stripped and ready to be installed. Will post pics soon. Gary |

Well it's been forever since I posted in this thread, I have really be busy at work and put some time away for Norwalk.
Now that I am back and caught up a bit it was time to get my ass in gear. Was having an issue on how I wanted to do the front plate to mount the engine, I wasn't happy with it the way it was. So after getting some tips and pictures from some of the guys in the Race section, I decided to roll up my sleeves yesterday and get with it. Main problem was the motor is setting pretty far down and back in the chassis, and I couldn't decide how to fix it, the following pics are what I started with and what I ended with, think it turned out well, heading over to the shop today to fab up the mounting tabs for the front and mid plates and if I have time maybe even fab up a cross member. Main issue was the plate mounts sitting way to low below the frame rail, basically, all I did was to cut the ears off both sides, and flip them.
The drivers side was just a cut, re-position, and fill some holes after welding. The passenger side was a little more involved as I had to raise the ear a lot and also fab a "step" forward to get around the water pump inlet tube. Now I have lots of room for my hose, the mounts line up perfect, and I thought it turned out well, just figured I would post it here so all the build pics could stay together just in case any one else wanted to look at how something was done. Thanks for the props guys, but not much to report, I did get a new rod shop steering column for it and installed it with a "d" slip section rod(just don't like the thought of a fiberglass front end and a 4' spear aim right at my chest).
The steering and geometry worked out really well, and with that much engine set back I can wheel it around the shop with one hand, really nice and smooth. Motor and tranny mounts are all positioned and welded in so that is all done, need to get on the tubs and floor. The biggest reason I have not gotten much farther is I am also working on three other 63 Tempest projects that are not on here, two of them are at the paint shop now. Also putting my frame off 69 FB 400 cp back together, about 80% done, just got my complete M&H harness for it this week. Hope to have some pics soon. As it's been stated on this forum by others, DON'T start more than one major build at a time, But did I listen?, Nooooo!! . I'll get back on it as soon as the weather breaks for good. Sorry, but that is all I have, thanks for asking, Stan Last edited by Transporter; 03-09-2014 at 09:46 AM. |

Hello Mike, glad to hear you are digging out, can't wait to see that 2+2 done. I WILL be at POCI just not sure which car, or how many. BTW, you should look me up on the way in, I'm only 120 miles straight north of Wichita. Stan |

WOW I'm impressed and looking forward to seeing it at the Uprising this year maybe. Love those 63's! Mine had a custom tag that said Baby GTO. See you in JUNE. Still have a 63 gas door some where I shaved the LeMans off and put GTO on it. Want me to try and a post picture of it. Will have it at the swap meet here in June. Les
