Default 65 GTO four speed NO console,,,correct orientation for shifter boot

Looking for the correct orientation for the shifter boot/ring on my 65. Intuitively it appears than mine should be rotated 90 degrees but regardless want it to be correct. Please see photo.

Not sure if 64 and 65 are the same boot and retainer, but here is the answer I got on the same question for a 64.

A couple ‘65 shifter boot and ring.

The round corner points to the passenger seat.

Last photo is a factory original boot and ring.

Google photos are so out dated. Very problematic.

I’m surprised people still use that.
