Re: 77 W72 trans am Restoration
here are some pics of my 77 W72 #'s matching trans am.
it is cameo white with blk standard interior. auto trans. 2.23 rear gear. I found the build sheet behind the rear seat, sweet come to find out it's a bird delete car It had a sun roof in it so that was to be fixed in the build. I found a 77 Hurst top car with all its bits for the roof. I paid 100.00 for it. it was in really bad shape. the drive train cut from it. I stripped my 77 , had the frame and under side of the body sand blasted along with a lot of other parts. here is some pics , enjoy . Last edited by lester; 04-24-2010 at 11:26 AM. |

Nice to see somebody getting serious on a later second gen. (2nd one this week)
Love the chalk marks on the firewall. Isn't funny how the repro floorboards are missing the most important part (toeboards)? FYI: There is no such thing as a "bird delete". They were optional on ALL T/A's except for the S/E's. A 77 with NO chicken would likely be a customer order car. Let me guess, you are painting it BLACK? |

2manyT/A'S yes my t/a came with no decals. I call it a bird delete or hood bird delete.
the code for the decals is not on my build sheet. it had the sale panel emblems only. for a customer order car it will say customer order on the build sheet. mine does not. se428bandit yes its 3.23 gear |

The fender & rear spoiler decals were standard equipment but hood bird was an option. |

Love it! I'm jealous.
Question: aren't the factory welds for the roof a little lower down where the sail panel meets the quarter? I'm curious as to why you cut where you did, instead of at the factory weld area. (Unless I'm wrong and those are the factory welds where you cut.)

yes I cut it at the factory spot welds. I cut the donor roof off below the seem and above on the other car. I used a small torch to melt the led out of each so I new ware to cut. once I put the hurst top on this just a few tacks I put all the trim on and the front and rear glass with trim in it to be sure of the fit. the front posts I took a plate and put it in behind the skin so the post on the roof would key lock together. used epoxy primer and used glass filler on it

Boy that right there brings back many memories! Not to say that I care to remember them but.... I used POR on all my inside panels when I exposed them to keep them from rusting inside out. Just an FYI - looking good man. Keep it up!

Lester, that's some nice work! The roof swap is the way to go. I've got a question for you. Is the red oxide primer the correct shade? The underside of my '78 shows lots of primer, but it's much more brown than what you used. I'm unsure if it's because of the different year or maybe different plant (mines a Van Nuys car).

the prime should be darker like PPG filler primer. but I used the PPG epoxy metal sealer.
once the body work is done I will mask off the car. put it back up in the air touch up any spots in the epoxy or re-spray it. then clear it but adding a tint to the clear to make it darker. I even thought about painting it the correct color. will see. I first washed the car with soap and water, then wiped it down with 330 and sprayed it

after glass beeded. worked on the wheel spoilers. I got all 4 almost done. but here is a pic of 1. all 4 needed work like this. I'm glad it worked out. I didnt want to spend 400+ on new repros. almost waveless. we put the t-top frame in to stiffen the roof. it will be ready to prime again Fri. then 400 wet block sand it. if it looks good after that , we'll move on to the other parts. and 600 wet sand the body later with the other parts. and I pick up the rear end Fri. also got the rear spring install kit.

Wow!!!
When do you have time to go to work???...LOL I've never seen that shield that essentially covers the primary choke pull off... That intake looks like a couple that I have, but the ones I have are both 78's. The opening on the drivers side between the water crossover passage and the #1 intake runner is solid iron on the two 77 intakes I have. I think they have different part numbers, but I'm not an expert, just a observation... I'm sure your engine is the 200 HP version. Man you did a great job on those wheel spoilers, I took my rear ones off several years ago, for my future build, they were cracked, don't know why or how, my front ones didn't last a year, I hit a big dog that ran out of a ditch. One of those zero reaction time deals, lucky I didn't wreck my car...BIG dog... Was there any rust on the dash of this car??? Mine started rusting on the extreme pass. side years ago. I just obtained a 79 parts car that had the RH quarter that was perfect, the LH was a rusty cob, and I cut the dash out Can't wait to see the next batch of pictures.
