Default Need Fender Nut for Hood Spring

Hello GTO/A body guys, My friend is in dire need of one little nut that got lost at the paint shop on his right fender. It is a '67 GTO. Actually many things came up missing at this guys shop, but that's not important right now. If any of you guys have a source or maybe have a few to sell. That would be great. Cant bolt the hood on until we get that. Don't know if it is just a common carriage bolt nut we could get at the hardware, or if it is a special size or not. Any help very much appreciated

Thanks

Eddie

Good Morning,

If it is the same nut as in the pic from my '66 Shop manual, it is a 3/8-16 Flange Nut which should be available from a hardware store or can be purchased as part of the kit from AMK products shown in the second pic.

Thanks for your reply and for your help sir,

I was afraid I didn't make it very clear. It is the nut that is somehow captured in the fenders so you can bolt the hood hinges on to the fenders. He's okay for bolting the hood to the hinges. Just gotta get that missing nut for the right fender. Thank you very much.

Sorry I misunderstood. Hopefully a member with a 67 GTO will respond. Just FYI, this is a link to the AMK Products site, most of the kits have pictures of the contents:

Yes Sir. Those are the ones. Missing one on the right fender. Mike said we probably could get what we need from AMK products, or we would be happy with 1 or 2 old originals. can clean them up in a tumbler. Do happen to know just what they are called. That always seems to be the barrier when looking for anything. Thanks for your help also and for posting the pic. Thanks to both you Chris & Mike. Read a little about both of you guys cars. Nice cars.

I happen to have the pax side fender off my 66 currently. Those nuts, as posted in Chris's picture, appear to be spot welded on a stamped boss of the fender. Mine are 3/8 - 16 thread, square nut, at least .5" long x .375" thick. The closest thing I can find for nomenclature is a "body mount cage & nut", only it looks like only the nut (no cage that I can see). Our host, Ames, has an example of this, part number S387DC, but that nut is 7/16 - 14. It seems you should be able to find a common
3/8 - 16 square nut, trim to fit, and spot weld if a suitable real part cannot be found.

Good luck,
Mike Pearson

Thank you Mike.

Regrettably, this car is already painted and fenders hanging on the car. Can't believe the body guy didn't even whisper this to my friend before painting it. He turned out to be pretty bad. Gonna try to fit a 3/8"-16 carriage nut (file it til it fits) then tack a washer to it and epoxy it in from the back side of the fender. Would have been so much easier when the body work was being done! It will be fine once the hinge is bolted to it.

Thanks for all you help and information.

Evidently they are called "pierce nuts" and are pressed in at assembly (according to some posts on a Chevelle forum). They look like this pic, tho I have not been able to find any in a 3/8 - 16 thread. I should mention that I do not know if my fenders are OEM, I learned the hard way the man who did the original resto took some different paths than I might have chosen, so please confirm thread size on the 67. Again, good luck.

Thanks Mike,
We have been filling and bleeding his brakes on his fresh '67. They are definitely 3/8"-16 for hinge to fender. We have already ran a 3/8"-16 thread chase through his OTHER 3 (not missing) "PIERCE NUTS" (thanks for nomenclature) to clean out the paint. Wish painter would have stopped and told us prior to painting. He did some other things too like skim coat over the body holes for the GTO emblems on the rear quarters. To his credit he paints excellent, just doesn't want do details like he should. Not a biggie, just have to fix what should not be.

Thanks for finding out what they are called. Logical name...pierce nuts.
