Default Coolant shutoff valve

Does the coolant shutoff valve go in line from pump to heater core, or heater core to head?
Also, if it's vaccume operated, is it normal open, vaccume closed or the other way around?
This is a 71 firebird, Ac car btw. Fwiw it didn't come with one but so second gens did and I want to add it. Tnx.
Steve

looks like it plumbs into the heater hose from the back of the pass side head to heater core. Coolant flows from head through header core back to the water pump. Makes sense to put before heater core as it will prevent migration of heated coolant from reaching heater core when shut off.
