Incedible car from what I see quickly,gas tank straps were black and have oversray(I have seen 73 firebird with straps that had black paint then,red oxide then body colour)Rear sway bar looks black (most likely phosphate,similar to brake master and calipers?).front spindles look to be natural steel but have been shotpeened.front sway bar natural cast steel.I have access to a 42k 1973 and a nice 1972 from Nevada.I just removed the original clips from the 72 if anybody needs details.maybe we could use this thread for comparing original 70-73 firebird plating,clips,routing,paint process,markings,undercoating ect.what is the deal with 1972 seat belts?what type does you car have ?could you include build date for referance?My e-mail is roundport@sympatico.ca if anybody wishes to swap nut and bolt,fanatical T/A facts and info.

The straps look to be painted flat black. The tank was painted flat black also. I am assuming that someone did this over the last 33 years. Am I wrong? The car was a December 71 built car. What are the diferent seat belt styles so I know what I have? They do have a long plastic sleeve on one side if that matters. -NJSteve

I just disassembled the front subframe. Here are some of the details (still greasy) that I found. Here is the original paper tag on the passenger side front coil spring, part number 3988100:

Here is the driver's side front spindle. There is green paint near the upper ball joint area and a yellow paint line by the spot where the lower control arm metal stop hits the spindle.

Here is the driver's side front rotor. It has a white or light blue paint daub on the outer cone area where the wheel bearing cap attaches and orange paint in the area where the minimum thickness number is cast in.

Here is the passenger side rotor. It has a white paint daub plus a green one next to it. The inset portion of the rotor that has the minimum thickness number cast in it, is painted pink.

Here is the pass side spindle. It appears to have a light blue paint mark in the same area as the green one on the driver's side spindle.

Is the original engine harness with the car?could you look and see if turbo 400 switch is on gas pedal (is this how shaker is actuated?)

The original engine harness was melted beyond recognition after the prior owner had a major carb fire...but the car still ran. I guess you can't kill a Pontiac with fire! Someone took the kickdown switch off of the gas pedal but the harness was still there under the dash. Crispy parts of the underhood wiring were also still hanging from the firewall in the engine compartment. And yes, the 72 T/A's used the gas pedal mounted kickdown switch, even on 4-speed cars. Shaker wiring became a whole lot simpler in 72, with a major reduction in extraneous switches, wires and brackets on the carb.

I am about to tear down my 70 T/A and am going to start with the fenders. Is it just the visable nuts and bolts holding the fenders on?

my 73 is a red car and the overspay isnt so noticeable I may have some pics of the untouched primer, but these are super, and a 72, thats so sweet, beautiful car!!

Yes, all the bolts are fairly obvious. 4 from the top side inside the engine compartment, one of which goes into the firewall behind the hood hinge...6 if you count the bolts holding the hinge. The rest are along the lip of the fender and along the lower edge. Then there are two that go into the middle of the wheel well from the underside.

Can the fenderwells be removed from my 70 trans am without removing the fender? My a/c box on the firewall is broken and I want to replace it without removing the fender if possible.

eaglesan13,

The passenger side inner fenderwell can be removed without taking off the fender. You'll have to remove the lower front and rear fender bolts and pull the lower portion of the fender outwards. Make sure that you jack up the car as high as you can get it and remove the wheel. The fenderwell should come out with a little jockying. I rotated it a bit until I found room enough to pull it out.

While pressure washing the frame I found something interesting. The paint came off rather easilt and on the passenger side inner frame rail at the rear, was a part number hand printed with a magic marker.

Here it is upside down. Any body out there know what this number is? Looks like a 5236 44. Does this correspond to anything?
