Default RE-Use of Cam Followers

What are your thoughts/opinions of re-using old cam followers on a new cam?

I've done it on the 2.3 ford OHC 4 cylinders with no ill effects as long as the contact surface is smooth and not cupped from wear. It's probably not the optimum way to do the job, but for your out of production engine with few sources of new, quality cam followers, it could suffice.

I might add that the OHC chrysler engines seem to get away with the owners cobbling them up with spacers under the lash adjusters and all kinds of backyard fixes because of the poor design, still using the old followers. Chrysler has a real problem in that area with their OHC engines.

Just like using used lifters on a new cam, I've seen some people do it to save money, and run into zero problems, and others didn't fair as well. It comes down to how worn are the old parts, and followers don't have to rotate like lifters do to keep from wiping cam lobes, the case hardening just needs to still be on the used parts. By the same token you can wipe a lobe with new lifters/followers too.

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck.

I reused mine but had them resurfaced first. Cheaper than new ones and they worked fine.

I would have them resurfaced, I have done it in the past. But I agree with everything that has been said. It may be OK depending? But don't be surprised if it does not work out. The last time I had a set resurfaced they charged around $5 each to do it. But that was at least 20 years ago. At the time tring to find new ones was difficult

Now Egge has reproduction followers for under $19.00 each, so a set of 12 for $226.80 so while not cheap, not really expensive either. But I also do not know about the quality either.

I had mine resurfaced 3 years ago and it was less than $100 for the entire set. I want to say like $80.
