newer engine for 1955 Chieftain
What is the newest engine that will bolt to a 1955 Hydramatic trans? Will the 1958 370 fit? Will the 347 or 370 bolt up with no modifications or is something else needed?

All engines up through '60 will bolt to the '55 HydraMatic. '59 & '60 just need a small amount removed from the back of the crank flange to clear the early HydraMatic flywheel.

There is more detail to be had here http://www.pontiacsafari.com/L1Garag...eID/index.html
Scroll down to "Interchangeability".

Yes, the PontiacSafari website is good. But it only says that "later" engines had the flywheel flange weights. As I said above, those weights didn't appear until the 389 (1959). The DualRange flywheel will bolt directly to all '55-58 cranks. Also- if the '59-60 flywheel flange is machined just enough to clear the early flywheel, there's no need to re-balance the crank.
