Power Steering
I bought my 68 GTO about 12 years ago. It is a numbers matching 400H.O. 4-speed. It was built without power steering or power brakes. I was 57 when I purchased it, I am now 69 and have severe arthritis in both my shoulders and arms and cannot turn the steering wheel at low speed or parked. I do ok after I get moving some. I added PB years ago because it was easy, not so with P.S. I see where Summit has a kit that has everthing needed to add PS. Does anyone know of a alternative way to get it steering easier without adding P.S.? The front suspension is in good shape and greased regular. It doesn't have wide tires on front. Because it is numbers matching and I also have the PHS papers, I have been hesitant to change anything. Would adding PS have any effect on the resale value? thanks, Mike

my thoughts .......
1st its your car and its not going anywhere until you do ..... dont beat yourself up any longer.... add power steering ..... so you can enjoy yourself and the car and life better .... no body will be the wiser when you pop the hood ,,,, unless they have your phs or know a bit about the 4 speed 68 HO's if you cant enjoy it ... change it .... dont worry about the other guys,,,, Scott if your looking for a complete unrestored set up pulleys to pitman arm with nice paitina,,and I have a couple late 67-68 dated steering boxs tooooo scott68gto@comcast.net 2o6 465 9165 |

Yep I'd go with used OEM parts, should be plug and play for the most part. Gather the parts, have the box and pump checked and rebuilt if necessary. Should only be an afternoon job with a decent guy wrenching and all the correct parts. SAVE all the original parts in the very unlikely event a buyer would want to go back to manual steering. And when I say SAVE ... I mean every nut, bolt, washer, pulley etc. labeled and boxed. Shouldn't hurt the value a single bit if you keep all the original parts.

if you keep all of the original parts with the car, I don't think it would hurt the value at all.
could you put std pulleys on the HO engine to make the swap easier? Or are they getting harder to find?

Are the pulleys different or have deeper grooves on the H.O.. If the only difference is the grooves, a standard pulley should be ok. My days of speed shifts, drag racing, and throwing belts are long gone.

I probably have all of the OEM parts you would need to add Power Steering to your car if you haven't done so already.
