Default Filler part on top of core support material?

Is the material metal or plastic on the original filler that sits on top of the radiator support ? I see the new ones they sell are plastic.

I want to say the originals were fiberglass, but I'm not sure. Hopefully someone with an original one will chime in.

I put the plastic re-pop unit on my 72 LeMans about 5 years ago, and I luv it. Makes a nice tool tray when working under the hood. I'll be installing one on my 71 GTO soon for the same reason.

The filler panel was originally injection molded plastic. Early reproductions from 25 years ago were of of a smooth (finished) top fiberglass design. The last 10 years reproduction is an injection molded plastic piece.

The large plastic filler was first introduced into production right after the Fall of '70 Strike & was installed on 455 & 455HO cars. It was not used on any early 71's. Have yet to run across an original 400 engined '71 or 72 400 car that originally came with the filler piece. I would love to run across a time capsule condition '71 400 3.90 rear GTO to authenticate, but that combination, only a very few were made. Original 350 T-41 cars did not get the filler either.

So you're saying my 72 Lemans with T41 never got the filler panel and it's not needed? I didn't get one with the car and parts. I hate to have to buy one if not necessary.

Yes, TJ, should not have originally had the filler piece.

Woohoo. Thanks for the info. Odd thing is, the assembly manual shows it. So it does get confusing.
