Default Is This a Factory Made Hole?

Hey Everyone,

Please take a look at the attached picture. It is a hole on the front drivers side body mount pirch. It appears to be punctured and not drilled or stamped. Is this something unique to a Ram Air car??? Or do you guys think it should be filled?

Thanks In Advance!!

I just looked at a few shots from the last 68 leMans I parted out and I believe I see the same hole. In addition, you can see from the shot below that this exists on the 68 gto in question during restoration

Appears factory to me...

Kurt,

Thank you for the picture and information. If know one responded to this thread I would have filled it in!! It is bizarre because the whole does not look factory made. Now that I know it is supposed to be there, what is it used for????

Thanks Again!!

No idea of the function for the hole, just that it was created by GM.

Could be a guide hole for the welding equipment.

Believe hole was intended for a Z-bar return spring , could be wrong.

I thought about that at first but then considered the angle that the spring would have been on. I think there is another attachment point for the spring, if I remember correctly.

Kurt, I originally thought it was a clearance whole for linkage on a column shift car but has been 30+ years since I had one and would be guessing. Still got the 68 4 spd car and it has the hole as well and remember seeing a pic that showed a spring attached to body mount perch for Z bar so it was a guess . I think It is definitely trans/clutch related and not a welding fixture hole. Right side has no such hole. You got a column shift car in your collection to narrow it down ? I read your gonna be a dad? Congratulations!!!

Z-bar return spring hole. The location was changed in 69 due to the locking column linkage. Scott

Yes, new dad as of 7/29/2010, bouncing baby girl of 8lb 2oz and 21+ inches. Mom and baby are great and healthy. Dr. looked at wife, then baby then me and said we're in for a very tall young lady. I can't wait until I hear things like, "Dad, stop! You're embarrassing me!" That way, I'll know I'm doing something right. hee hee

As Scott posted, return spring location it would seem. Column shift pictures show the same hole!

Congratulations!
Dr. said the same about my son and he was right. He is now 22 y.o. and 6'-6" tall.

Good for you and your son. He'll enjoy it. I skipped right past 6'-6" to 6'-8" and my wife is just under 5"-9". I hope the daughter is not 6'-6"!

Old thread I am lighting up, that I have read in the past. I have a spring that is labeled as 68-72 return spring. But Its too long to fit in the location of the pict in post #1 I would imagine the spring should be lightly stretched while holding the clutch pedal to the rubber stop under the dash?

I'll go out on a limb here and guess the 68 spring is different (shorter) than 69-72?

Can you post a pic of the spring and a length, I need a return spring but I don't want to get the wrong one, are these what you have?

The one I have is 8-1/2" long. Bought it from ames over 10 years ago. Package print has a date of 1991.

To compound the problem for me I filled in all the extra holes that didn't belong on the firewall, etc when I painted the Body. Unfortunately I Must have filled in the hole on the body mount for the spring. It just looked like somebody crudely punched a hole in there. But, I looked at the pictures of where that hole is supposed to be & the spring I have would be for sure an inch too long?

If I think of it later I will post a picture holding it in position hooked in the Z Bar & clutch pedal returned all the way up. The spring reaches much further than were the hole would be.

My 68 does not have that hole. It is a Ram Air manual trans but I don't think that would make any difference.
maybe some cars received that hole while others didn't?

OK thanks, the one I posted is from OPG but there are others also, The Parts Place, RPS and NPD are a few.

Interesting, if it's not attached to that hole what does your return spring connect to?

I'll confirm if my car actually has that hole, been wondering where that spring attaches.

If anyone can post more spring lengths, that might be helpful too.

Since my car is in boxes I'll have to do some digging to find the original spring

I bought a replacement spring from Parts Place but its 8 1/2" like the Ames spring. I'm guessing the vendors are using the 69-72 spring as the common one.

From the 68 manual
