Ennis Lund was at the POCI Spearfish convention and at that time he was in the process of restoring that car. Jack Steele bought it before Ennis completed it and as is mentioned above it first sold at auction out of the Jack and Donna Steele collection. At Spearfish Ennis had a folder with gobs of pictures of the car as it was being worked on, and his wife was nice enough to email those pictures to me later that year and I still have all of them in my computer. It is a very nice car.
Here a few of the pictures I have. One thing that really caught my attention when I first saw it was how crude the oil pan is. Last edited by 61-63; 08-25-2019 at 07:20 AM. Reason: spelling |

Wow - Thanks for sharing John. That car was very well bought at $108K last. The starlight black with blue interior is outrageous

Noel I have no idea what Jack paid Ennis for that car but I'd bet it was at least $250k. And it brought less than half that at auction. Jack made out on quite a few cars at his auction but not on that one I don't think. It is clear the day of the high dollar early 60s big Pontiacs has passed. It took Mike Marsh years to sell his '62 all original sd car and it brought somewhere in the $80k range. '61 Venturas are now going for $20s-30s. Several really nice '63 Cats have sole at auctions within the past year for less than $20k. Every once in awhile one brings a good price.
Here are a few more pictures. |

Thanks for the great pictures. They help verify the quality and originality of this beauty. The color combination is rare and fantastic. I have been following the sale prices of SD's and 61-63 full size in general, since I am an owner and agree with the statements above. This car appears to be a steal at 108K or whatever, compared to 5-7 years ago. I want to agree and say the days of the big buck, big cars are over for good, but I have been wrong so many times. I think it's safe to say if you have the means to make it happen, NOW is the time to jump in and buy the SD Catalina you have always wanted.
Just think, you can buy a SD Catalina for about the price of a "new" luxury Japanese or Korean car or SUV that will be worth $600.00 in 10 years. |
