Default Stock fuse holder w/4 amp fuse, is 5 amp ok?

I have an inline stock fuse holder for a 4 amp fuse. This powers the relay for seat locks and power door locks in my 72Lemans. I have a 5 amp fuse (these take the short, 1/2"), is this safe or do I need to find and order 4 amp as the manual states.

Usually you wouldn’t want to put a higher amp fuse in something that’s rated for lower amps. Better to play it safe and go with the 4 amp fuse.

Again I disagree. Electrical rule ,is never ever put a higher amp fuse than what the wire is rated for.

It seems I had an issue one time before trying to find a specific fuse (I think 3 amp shorty) and couldn't find one. I did eventually order some of those for my 55 Chevy headlight switch. Maybe I have to order the 4 amp too if I can't find that locally too. If I were to use one of the 3 amp, I'll assume that could blow easily?

Tiger,
You need to keep in context. Not replacing a 100 amp fuse with a 125 amp fuse.

Replacing a 4 amp fuse with a 5 amp fuse. Both are a 25% increase, 1 amp more in the OPs case, 25 amp in the example.

The wiring will be more than capable of handling 5 amps!

tjs,
A 3 amp fuse may..or may not....blow depending on how much overload protection was designed into the cct.

There is power to the circut at all times, but it's only activated when the power door lock switch is flipped or you open the door for seat back locks. If any of that matters.

I would put a 4 amp fuse in it as soon as I could get one. In a pinch, I might use the 5 amp but only until I could get the 4 amp and only if the circuit is behaving properly. That is, why did the first fuse blow? If there is an overcurrent that blew the original 4 amp and you put a 5 amp in, it may blow too and while it will probably not be a complete wiring meltdown with one extra amp...you have just run even more current through the shorted circuit that blew the 4amp one and possibly now you have shortened the life of the relay coil.
That's just me though.... I don't like using fuses or breakers that exceed the rated current limits.

The fuse holder was hanging apart when I bought the car. So, no fuse in the holder.

Just order a SFE-4 on NAPAOnline or go to your NAPA store and order them (they may even have one in stock).
