Default 1965 GTO Transmission options

Was there an option for the 3 speed automatic (hydramatic) available in 1965?? Were there any factory produced under a COPO order?

I thought 67 was the first year for 3 speed auto on GTOs. 65 had a 3 speed manual, 2 speed power glide and 4 speed manual. Yes?

Everything I can find says there was only one choice and that was the 2 speed power glide (Jetaway). I have a friend that says he has a '65 with window sticker showing an optional 3 speed auto and the car is numbers matching. The PHS will tell the tale. Thanks Qball!

The 2 speed auto used in early Pontiacs was NOT a powerglide. It was a Super Turbine 300. Similar but different!

Was it as crappy as the Chevy slip and slide?

Yes, I know the difference between a power glide and a ST-300. I own a '64 GTO with a 2 speed automatic, and have rebuilt a ST-300. My question is " Has anyone heard of a 3 speed automatic been optioned in a 1965 Tempest/GTO?"

To put it mildly, your friend is FOS. No 65's ever were factory built with 3 speed automatics. (Turbo 400's) PHS will tell him so.

67 was the 1st year for a 3 speed auto in the GTO. Your friend is just trying to start something & now is possibly to stubborn to admit he was wrong.

A 1965 GTO factory equipped with a 3-speed auto is an extremely rare car.

One of none.

TH400 in a '65 Pontiac A body? No

TH400 in a '65 Pontiac B body? Yes

Perhaps he is misreading the window sticker? I believe both the 3 speed standard floor shifted trans will be listed under the GTO package, with the optional automatic listed on a separate line.

In agreement with the above comments.

Also - "COPO" is a Chevrolet specific term, relative to Chevy Central Office.

You can pull the ST-300 and put in a turbo 350 or 400 trans. Guys I know have done that. But when they show their car at a car show they enter it as modified.

No Powerglide in early Pontiacs? Well - yes and no. I think it just comes down to what year body and engine you are thinking of. This seems to be a recurring argument and I don't mean to keep the argument going. But look at the attached.

The 1966 parts book seems to believe there were Powerglides. But when you read the parts listings they are talking about only being behind a 6 cylinder. That of course precludes the use in a GTO. But in a Tempest or LeMans (I think both could have the 6) an automatic would be a Powerglide. That engine was essentially a Chevy anyway so perhaps the bell housing bolt pattern favored using a Powerglide. As for a 65, I didn't research that far. And in 66 there came the Pontiac OHC 6 which was a different animal. So when someone says they had a 64 with a Powerglide they may be right. Unless they swear it was in a GTO. Then it would be BS.

In '65, the LeMans wasn't available with a 6.

In both '64 & '65 the base engine for the Tempest and Le Mans was the 215 six.

Even up through the early '70s the A-body base engine was a six.
