One of the guys that built this car originally within Pontiac Engineering is still around, and still works for GM in the preproduction build operations.
He was the youngest technician within Pontiac Engineering at the time. He would be a great (and willing) resource if anybody decides to restore this car. Thanks for posting that, Keith. K

Thanks for posting the Link to this interesting Car, I do not think that the asking price is out of line for a 1 of 2 and only remaining example of a documented engineering car, that and the parts car to finish it.
The Decals on the door panels can be reproduced at a reasonable cost as they can be measured and traced. I just had the graphics for my 77 Astre Formula redon and installed for under $400 and that included 2 large door decals, 2 small front and rear decals, and the 2 color tape stripes.

1978 Grand Am CA #2 for sale with parts car
I have the Grand Am CA #2 for sale here in Tucson together with an excellent rust-free parts car. Both cars have been in Arizona most of their lives. $8,900 for the pair. If interested, give me a call.
I have made a high-quality scan of the GOOD "Grand Am CA" decal that is on the driver's door panel that can be used to make a true reproduction of these "last-of-their-kind" pieces. (Note that I've attached a photo of the sun-dried BAD passenger side decal below for your reference. Let me know if you'd like to see more photos... Thom Sherwood 520-798-3200

I've read a few previous threads here about that particular concept car.
I take it that was the white car in Detroit? Too bad somebody did not save the pics off the craigslist ad and post them here. Totally forgot or didn't notice the black one was a column shift. Seems odd that they did not utilize a floor shift model to start with. Thom, is that a 305 or 301 car? Kent's link is broken. I could only narrow it down to 4400 matches when I tried to search for the thread on the gbody forum. |

The Detroit Craigslist ad referred to in the opening post of this thread was for Grand Am CA #2 here in Tucson, AZ. (I was posting it for sale in several major cities prior to Craigslists' "ghosting meltdown" that is currently deleting many posts thought to be from professional scammers. Maybe everybody should start using Backpage.com instead of CL?!?
So yes, it is/was the same black car seen elsewhere here on PY forums, too. ((Grand Am CA #1 was SILVER in color and is believed to have been destroyed by GM because the roof was chopped/cut to make it look like it had T-Tops for the show car circuit 1978-'79 hence deeming it a liability to GM, I guess? Can't confirm this theory, but it sounds logical to many.)) Anyway, to respond to your points... 1) The floor shift and console was not available in cars with the factory DELCO AM/FM/CB Radio (as mine has) for clearance reasons apparently, so the column shift was how it left the assembly line. Odd, I know. 2) The car was built with the Pontiac 301-4bbl. That motor, along with the nitrous system that HOT ROD Magazine installed under the hood, is STILL THERE. 3) I'm not sure what happened to the discussion on this car in the G-Body forum that Kent posted a link to. Apparently it was moved or deleted. Any further questions, don't hesitate to contact me directly: output@colorteks.com -Thom

If we modify a car slightly, such that it can be put back to original, then it can be sold/auctioned at the end of its GM usage. However, if the modifications are such that it cannot be returned to saleable status/production configuration then it must be scrapped. K

I had the Motor Trend article saved in my artifacts for several years, but had not seen it since lost in a fire thirty years ago. And it was all B/W photos IIRC. That car was also converted to a manual trans, and had the 305 it seems. Unless there was a descrepincy with the engine being listed as "5 liter". |

UPDATE (JAN 14, 2015): The Grand Am CA #2 (along with the parts car) has been SOLD to a buyer from Nevada. He hopes to bring it back to the way it appeared in HOT ROD Magazine. Let's wish him the best and keep our fingers crossed that this unique peice of Pontiac history will be well preserved and appreciated by future generations!

That's great Thom!! I'd love to have had it but life dictates otherwise. Hope to see it in restored condition in the future. Be sure to tell the buyer about this site, he may find it very useful.

So this is your way of "evening things up" because someone started a post about a '78 in the 73-77 forums? Just the kind of D-I-C-K thing we've come to expect from you.

I've looked over and saved those articles, ads, pix, prompts, and "updates" on the '78 and several times - how many YEARS has it been posted For Sale? Actually consider purchasing that '78 '79 GA 2-car package and even have a complete '78 W72 400 that would bolt in...and then realize history to maintain whatever value of the cars provenance would mean retaining the 301, etc. so forget that. And come full circle that even though like smaller Gbody package I prefer the 1st Gen/1st Year Grand Ams 1973 like the one posted/2nd Gen Brds/GTOs, so nix that. Did REALLY like that dark blue '79(?) GA w shaker that was FS also, same deal personal preference. Kudos to the new owner and good luck with it. |
