Price delivered to dealership -$3265.00. Drove that car until May 19, 1971, then took delivery of a 1971 GTO, 455 HO, blue hardtop similarly equipped as the 1967 car. But had the Honeycomb wheels and black-walled tires which cost me extra! Wish I had them both!! I'm 84. FHummel |

Bought my 68, hardtop, auto, AC, PS, PB GTO in 1976 for $1100 with 93,000 miles. Everything worked, no damage, paint was pretty tired. Drove it for about four years, put on about 30,000 miles before I took it apart for a quick restoration around 1980 .... should be back on the road for the first time this fall

Bought my first Firebird in the early 80s. Was still in high school. A lady who had just gotten divorced moved into our little country town. We had just gotten our first fast food restaurant (Sonic) so we all hung around there. She came in one night in the Firebird.
When she went to leave, it wouldn’t crank, so I went over and helped her. Got it running for her and mentioned that I like the car. Saw her pass a few days later, and she turned around and ran me down. Asked if I would give her $700 for the car, as she wanted something more dependable. Told her I would have her the cash that afternoon. Later that day, I was the owner of a 69 Firebird 400, Brown with cream colored (may originally been white) vinyl top, with factory AC. Won a fair amount of money with that car. Sold it a few years later to buy a 79 factory 400/4spd car that had tops, 3.23 posi, 4wheel disc etc from the original owner. Wish I had either, or both now |

Curious, was the 396/375 a solid lifter configuration?

It never gave me any real problems. Yes, it was a solid lifter motor. It ran quite well back in the day. One night a bunch of us were following each other when we came to a long straight away that ran from an intersection. Naturally, we all had to get on our cars. My buddy had a warmed over 440 6 pack road runner with 410's. I knew he was going to stomp it so I went after him. He pulled me for a few yards until the 396 started to "get on the cam". Then I almost ran over him. He was very quiet the rest of the night. LOL The guy behind me had a 351 cleveland torino and faded away so quickly I couldn't see him in my rear view mirror. Great times!

In 1988 At age 16 one of my father’s friends had a L78 powered 69 Camaro that had been sitting in the garage he offered to me for $500. I still have it today.
About 13 years ago I got a call from friend in Texas, he was dying of cancer. Me & him converted his 79 TransAm from 403 to 1971 low milelarge car 455 back in 1990. We bought it from Taylor’s junkyard for $100. We changed the timing chain, the water pump, and took off the pan gasket to check the bearings out. We did the front springs, changed the radiator, did everything to it right. After graduation he drove it back to his dads in Texas and went to work for an off shore drill, the TA just sat in his garage not driven up until I got the call. He offered it to me for $500 with no rust: Still got it.

1967 GTO 400 4-spd, 65k miles bought early 1975 for $600.
No extra charge for the G50-14 rear tires w/Torque thrust D's that rubbed the rear wheels over every bump! I loved it. James Q

I purchased my first car, a very tired 68 Mercury Cougar, when I was 15 and before I had a license. I paid $75 for it and drove it home. I got a few lumps from the old man for that one. When I turned 18 I picked up a beautiful 69 Camaro Z28 for $4500. I had to take out a co-signed loan for $2500 to make it happen. The original 302 was gone and had been replaced with a 327 w/solid lifter cam. That was during the 80's, when I would buy the Trading Times publication at the gas station to find cars.

[QUOTE=FHummel;6343945]Bought my 1967 GTO hardtop - Mariner Turquoise, Black interior - 4 speed, console, posi, A/C, Power disc brakes (front only, 1st time offered), steel wheels w/ dog dish hubcaps. Ordered in early September, took delivery Dec. 21st, 1967

But had the Honeycomb wheels and black-walled tires which cost me extra! Wish I had them both!! I'm 84. FHummel[QUOTE] Me again - now 87. Still have my 2008 purchased in 2017(80K plus miles), and 2009 Black Pontiac G8 GT (102K+ miles - had 16k+ when purchased in 2009), and my Red 2009 Pontiac Solstice GXP auto (purchased in 2017) with GM turbo upgrade w/ 53K+ miles. All 3 are still delightfully performing as when I bought them. They drive like new! The 2008 G8GT is IOM (Ignition Orange Metallic), every option that was offered plus additional GM items. I haven't even changed plugs in them! No oil leaks or any other! A Pontiac owner/driver since 1962 when I bought my 1961 Ventura 2 door hardtop with 4 speed stick, 425A tri-power. Buy Pontiac if you can find one and enjoy! Last edited by FHummel; 02-17-2025 at 12:59 PM. Reason: added info |
