1978 Trans Am SE Engine code
I looked at a 78 T/A SE with engine code X4 but I can't find any info on what motor this is. The heads say 6X. Also on the engine plate under the hood if it is a SE would it not say Y82?

Not all of them have the Y82 on the data tag. I'm looking at 2 of them at the moment that are deteriorated factory original Y82 SEs and neither of them say Y82.
400s available for the 1978 Trans Am were YA YU X7 WC X7 and WCs were the 220hp W72 motors. |

Look for the date code back by the distributor, and the block casting code below the back of the passenger side head.
X4 is a 400 in 76 and a 301 in 79. (also 400 in 73)

Only the Norwood built cars (vin code N) have the Ycodes on the trim tag. The VN built cars (vin code L) did not have it.

Hmmm........
I don't know why anyone would change a trim tag, no real benefit. I'd say if your serious about buying it to get PHS on it first. |
